Snap! Bang! The loud crash jerked me out of my dreamless sleep.

I sat bolt upright in bed as I listened, terrified, at the loud noises coming from the downstairs kitchen.  Hands shaking, I pushed myself unwillingly out of bed, untangling my limbs from my soft, warm blankets, I snuck quietly to the door of the bedroom and tentatively reached for the handle and turned the nob slowly.

The door began to creak as I opened it. Flashes of lightning were playing patterns of light against the walls making me even more jumpy because of the weird looking shadows. On the way out I reached down to a basket on the right side of my door and took a firm grip on the shaft of a steel baseball bat. One foot in front of the other I started down the hallway.

Hearing the thunder get farther and farther away calmed my nerves ever so slightly and I apprehensively started for the stairs, having a firm grip on the railing I slowly made my way down the long stairwell with a white knuckled grip on the bat. I felt the brush of something soft and furry on my leg, with everything  that was crossing my mind I jumped high as a scream escaped my lips. It scared the hebejeebe’s out of me.

Looking down at the culprit I swallowed a giggle when I realized it was only Charm my two year old Himalayan cat! Each step I took I made sure it was as light as possible, not wanting the stairs to creak, because they were old, just like this house. I regret buying this house every time I have to fix something or a floorboard creaks. But if I didn’t have it where would I keep all my horses? As my foot came down halfway down the stairs a board creaked so loud I raised my bat as quickly as I could, thinking it came from down in the kitchen, realizing it was my weight that had caused the sound. Shakily I continued down the stairs.

When I reached the bottom I cautiously peaked around the corner to see if the way was clear. As my eyes swept over the dark room a lightning bolt zig-zaged through the sky, illuminating the kitchen. Terror gripped my heart as I screamed at the sight of a large creature staring right at me with glowing green eyes. As soon as the first thoughts to run raced through my mind I reached for the light and flipped the switch. Right there in the middle of the room stood Callie, my three year old collie, shaking as blood dripped from her side, a large gash was located right behind her left front leg, it was quite wide and a small puddle of blood was begining to form as the moments ticked away.

Callie had been terribly afraid of thunderstorms ever since I found her when she was just a pup.

If I had known we were in for a big storm Callie would have been in my bedroom with me. As I came to my senses I took in the scene; plates and cups from the glass cabinet were thrown across the room, my beautiful glass cupboard was shattered and there was glass covering the floor.

Racing over I knelt beside Callie and examined her scar, it was deep.

I better call the vet to let him know that I will be coming in. I thought to myself. I ran to the phone and typed in the vet’s number. The secretary answered and I explained to her what happened as I headed for the beding closet.

“Whatever you do just make sure you don’t touch the wound. It could easily get infected.”

“I will, can you just make sure that the vet is ready for us when we come in?” I asked “And we will be there as soon as we can”

“Just know that it will be a different vet, Mr. Benet is out on a call so he got someone else to take over while he is away. We will see you soon.” She hung up before anything more could be said.

Fear began to work its way into my heart when I saw that the bleeding had not slowed, I didn’t even know how long she had been bleeding for. I was at the closet and grabbed a few old blankets to wrap Callie in, being hurt was enough she didn't need to be cold and wet too. Reaching for my key’s I remembered my jacket. Throwing it on I ran back to the kitchen to grab Callie.

Working the blankets around the injured dog I gingerly picked her up and walked as fast as I could out the door and to my truck. As I started the engine I felt the cold soak through my wet pj’s and my slipper clad feet. I blasted the heat and drove as fast as I could on the slippery roads with the rain pelting down on my truck.

The wind had gotten worse but the rain had subsided a little. At least there was no more thunder or lightning, nothing to make Callie more upset then she could handle.

Mud covered the roads and little streams began to work their way across the gravel. This would be a long, slippery ride.
