It's the third night since the first time she appeared under the light pole. Unlike yesterday I wasn't trying to stop myself from thinking about her. I was actively thinking about her. And I was ready tonight. No behind the curtain shit.
I'm waiting for her on the porch. I even made her a cup of coffee. I check the time on my phone and it is five minutes before twelve. I've been waiting since eleven o'clock. At least the weather is fine tonight. It's warm and the sky is clear. I'm sitting on a log I keep on the porch. Another hour goes by and her coffee is cold now. It's almost one o'clock. I think I might have scared her off because she usually turns up around midnight. Well, two nights isn't usually, but still. I'm beginning to feel sleepy so I decide to call it a night. I empty her cup into the pot plant next to me and walk to the door. Maybe she'll be back tomorrow.
"Hi creepy guy behind the curtain."I turn around and it's her. Under the light pole." Going back to your safe place?" she says with a smirk on her face.
"N- I- You- I-" I stutter and let out a sigh, and she chuckles at it. "I was waiting for you."
"Was the extra cup for me?" She has that resting face again. I don't know which is more beautiful, her resting face or her smile.
"Yes. It got cold s-"
"That's sweet," she cuts me off. "Come join me."
Her face tells me that that was more of a demand than a request, so I bend down and put the cups on the ground then I unlock the porch gate and walk to the gate of the yard. I try to sneak glances at her as I'm walking but I lock eyes with her every time and have to play it off by looking away. As I walk out of the gate and towards her I get her sweet scent again. She wearing jeans and a shirt today. I might just be exaggerating but jeans and a shirt have never looked this good on anybody. I want to compliment her but past experience has taught me that I somehow always seem creepy or cheesy when I try to compliment people.
"I didn't think you'd come out." She says and I look up at her eyes.
Her hair is in a sleek ponytail and I notice her heart shaped face and kind-of-big forehead. I realize that she's waiting for me to say something so I blurt out the first thought that came to mind.
"You're beautiful." Shit!
"Thank you," she responds and smiles. The smile definitely beats the resting face. "I knew you had to get something from your two night observation."
"Why do you come stand here?" I inquire. "Are you waiting for someone?"
I thought about this earlier today. It made the most sense to me considering the way she was dressed last night. She's probably waiting for her boyfriend. Must be a pretty worthless boyfriend if he stands her up two nights in a row.
"Look at the sky," she points towards the star lit sky. "Do you see the three stars that are right next to each other?" she asks.
There's no moon tonight so the stars are all shining a little brighter than they normally do. After scanning the sky for a few seconds I see it.
"There," I point to the trio of stars. "I see it."
"That's why I come here," she says. I look at her then back at the stars. It's just three stars in a row. Hardly anything special if you ask me.
"Do you live close to here?" I ask.
"No." she's still looking up at the stars. "I'm not from around here. I'm a long way from home." The expression on her face changed. She looks sad now.
"What's so special about those stars?" I ask in an attempt to get her talking before she gets emotional.
"Those stars have only been visible once before. They appeared again two nights ago. And tonight is the last night they will grace the sky."
Her voice is soft and calming. Like she's speaking to herself more than me. I look back up at the stars and I feel her soft small hands touch the sides of my face. My heart immediately starts pounding faster and harder against my ribs.
"Listen to them," she whispers in my ear. I can feel her warm breath on my skin as she speaks.
"Close your eyes and listen to them." I turn my head to look at her hoping to see a joking expression on her face but her eyes are closed and her head is tilted up towards the sky."Listen. You can hear their music."
