The cold winter already began to carve the air with its fierce snowflakes long ago, like misty petals falling from a levitating breathless garden. Clary felt as if her soul was in a farmyard as she left the ballroom, the pressure on the back of her neck as on her eyelids fatigued her and she felt a faint trickle of breath carving itself into her heavy lungs. The sheet music still throbbed in the back of her mind, her body's responses to the music had drained her energy. She had a brief fantasy of lying on a quilted blue cloud as her plumage loosened the rope of emotions like a hand flowing water from a faucet.
Just so.
Clary understood herself deeply─she knew that, beyond being tired, she was upset with herself for being sad on one of the biggest holidays of the year. Not contacting her parents was really taking its toll.
Too high a price. Why did it keep going up? God, or was it their damn guts? They'd always been underweight in love terms, but lately they were really acting like they were on some kind of substance─What was the reason? She wanted them to tell her, not keep playing Simon Says like they were at kindergarten level.
