---------------------The day was hot. Edward couldn't stop sweating under that flaming sun. Even wearing a hat, his head was heated.
"He is taking too long, where did he get in?" Ed says to himself, stamping his foot on the floor. He and Thompson needed to go to the neighboring town to sort out some things, but it had been at least 10 minutes now. Ed couldn't get out of there anyway, he was taking care of the two horses they would both use to walk the path.
Edward felt Thompson's horse nuzzle his head, probably impatient too. "Susan, no. Be a good girl." The black and white horse screeched, hitting Edward with her muzzle again, this time, making his face turn to the side. He spotted Thompson walking slowly with his head down in his direction.
"Ah, there you are. What happened? I thought you wouldn't come." "Sorry, son. I was too lazy to get out of bed today." He lifted his head, dark circles were noticeable under his eye, his expression was sleepy, it looked like he was going to pass out at any moment. "... Are you feeling well?" Edward said as his partner walked past him, stroking Susan. "It looks like you haven't sleep in a long time."
Thompson looks back, the concern on the boy's face was clear. He hesitates before confessing. "Uhh, I just... I think I'm having a lot of nightmares these days." He takes a carrot out of the pocket of his navy blue overcoat. "I end up waking up in the middle of the night and I can't sleep afterwards." Thompson hates letting his guard down like that, saying something so personal to his partner. But Ed was his best and only friend, he felt good about telling him that.
"Have you ever thought about having hot milk before going to sleep? Or maybe tea?" Edward speaks enthusiastically in the last part. The shorter man shook his head, exhaling through his nose, in order to hold a laugh. "I told you, I don't like tea." He shows the carrot in front of Susan and she eats it, almost biting Thompson's fingers.
"The attempt was good." Edward puts his hands in his pants pockets. "But seriously, I think I know how you can have a great night's sleep and without needing teas." The sheriff turns, looking curiously at the boy dressed in green. "... Tell me more." He says looking really interested. "You know, when I was a kid and I couldn't sleep, I usually sleep with my pet or a plushie. In addition to sleeping well, I didn't have any nightmares." Thompson raised an eyebrow.
"It's a good idea, but I think you forgot that I don't have any plushies or a pet." Edward adjusted his bandana around his neck, but at this point, he didn't know if it was because of the incessant heat from the west or if it was the heat of his own body because he was ashamed. He swallowed. "Well, I can sleep with you if you want."
Thompson opened his mouth to say something, but there was no sound. That was out of the blue, was he serious? "You what?-" Susan pushed Thompson forward with her snout, causing him to stumble closer to Edward. "Hey- Ow! Wait a minute, wouldn't that be a little weird?" He says sincerely, still not quite understanding. He looks at Susan for a moment, annoyed that she pushed him. "I-I know that sounds weird, but I just wish I could help. If it doesn't work out, I promise never to get near your bed again!" Ed looked around to make sure no one was listening to the conversation, clearly nervous.
He was about to withdraw his offer, but Thompson spoke first. "Okay, whatever, I'll think about it. We can work this out later." He points to Edward's brown horse. "Now go up, it will take us at least half an hour to get to the other city." He says trying to end the conversation without being embarrassing for both of them. The detective nodded and takes the horse's reins. His hands were sweating. Now he would have to wait until nightfall for him to discover his friend's decision. This is going to be a huge agony for the rest of the day.
