Chapter 10
CapturedThe first thing I became aware of was the gentle vibration of the car. The next was my sore wrists from being bound together. I opened my eyes to see it was still nighttime so I either wasn't out long or I'd been unconscious for an entire day. Who had done this to me?
I look over at the driver to see who was there and saw Andre. I tried yelling but there was tape over my mouth as well as my wrists.
"Hello, it's nice to see you're awake." He says to me in a cheery voice, "I was starting to worry you weren't going to wake up before we got to the river."
The river? Why are we going to a river? I look out the window to see we're on the road that'll take us to the bridge Andre and Robert had gone bungee jumping on the second time we'd met.
"Cars are a beautiful thing. They can get you anywhere you want to go in a blink of an eye." He says happily speeding up a little. "Oh, that reminds me can you swim?" He asks me out of the blue.
Of course I can swim. I grew up on an island. I learned to swim before I learned to talk. However Andre doesn't know that because he ditched us. Wait, river, know how to swim? He plans on drowning me! I fight the restraints as I start to panic. I have to get away.
"No matter. I was thinking a rope around your neck would be good. You'd know exactly what it feels like to die like I did." He says a tad cheerier. Is he talking about the monument suffocating him because I'm fairly certain hanging snaps your neck first.
Thinking a little clearer I pulled the duck tape off my mouth as quickly as I could. It still hurt and still took my lip skin with it. I focused on not crying and licked the blood off my lips.
"Who are you?" I asked the demon.
"What are you talking about? I'm Andre." He says with a hurt expression. I glare at him silently. "Not buying it are you?" He laughs ruefully. "Originally hundreds of years ago my name was Honaw. Now my name is Andre. I've rather taken a fancy to my new name." He says smugly.
"What are you and why are you here?" I demand.
"Wow, you must be dense. What do you think I am?" He asks sarcastically, "Don't strain your brain too hard thinking." He says patronizingly. When I don't answer he sighs disappointed, "You're no fun you know that right?" He says sulkily. He replies a bit more seriously, "Originally I was a bear spirit that the natives of this land paid homage to and I guarded their crops and gave them a bountiful harvest. After the foreigners came they converted everyone to a new religion and demonized me. With no more people praying to me I had to resort to drastic means to survive. That's how I ended up becoming a real demon. I was then sealed away about two hundred years ago to that wretched hole. Then your idiot friend gave me the perfect opportunity to escape." He explained, "As for why I'm here, I really don't have a reason. I just wanted the chance to live again."
"Why do you want to kill me?" I ask him.
"You know too much. You, that other guy and my family knew Andre too well. Hence forth I can't risk any of you finding out." He says exasperated.
I think over his words carefully. If he intends to kill me before I could tell anyone, what about Tory? Tory knows about Andre too. "What about Tory? He knows I stayed over and he'll know what you did!"
He hums to himself for a moment thoughtfully, "Should I tell him or should I not?" He muses.
What did you do!?" I yell at him.
He looks at me out of the corner of his eye and smiles, "Well, as we speak I'm framing you for murder and planning your suicide. As for, what's his face, he doesn't suspect a thing so I'll leave him alone for now." He brags and basks in his own victory.
"What did you do to Tory?" I yell.
"Shh... indoor voice." He says mockingly, "Not just Tory. What kind of monster sends a little boy to the other side without his parents?" He says earnestly, "Which leads to I may have tampered with the heating system and created a carbon monoxide leak and framed you for it." He says nonchalantly.
"WHAT?" I yell. I'm being set up by a supernatural being that technically doesn't exist. "You don't have to kill anyone! No one but old people and religious people believe in demon possession! Even then christians only believe in spiritual demons like the seven sins! No one believes in demons like you anymore!" I yell at him.
"Shh!" He hisses at me, "Superstition dies hard." He tells me. "Well we're here. If you try to run I'll break your legs." He threatens and brings the car to a stop. He gets out and walks around the car the long way. I bite frantically at the tape around my wrists. Honaw opens the door and roughly pulls me out. I tried to make it hard for him by dragging my feet but he effortlessly pulled me along.
"Stop fighting so hard. You're not getting anywhere. I have full control of this body and its limits. Andre was quite strong and without human limitations this body is quite a bit stronger." He sighs irritated with me and swings me around in front of him and throws me a bit further ahead. The sudden movement gives me a head rush and leaves me dazed and confused. I try to get up and run but a swift kick to the back of my right knee stopped that.
"Hey! Whose out there?" A familiar voice asked from the shadows at the other end of the bridge. Robert's flashlight cuts through the dark and lands on me. "Dyllan what are you doing out here this early?" He asks walking closer, "Andre, you to. What are you two doing?"
I look back to see Honaw looking at Robert angrily, "I don't have time for this." He muttered through his teeth.
"Robert! Get out of here!" I yell at him.
"Not until I know what's going on." He yells back, "Andre what's going on?" He asks sounding irritated.
I feel a spark of angry desperation, "He's a fucking demon!" I yell at him.
"What are you talking about?" He asks getting closer and closer. Honaw dashes behind Robert and twists his arm and plants his face in the ground.
"You should have walked away. You were going to be the one I let live too." He says in a false disappointed voice.
