I slid my key into the door and yanked it to the left until I heard a satisfying click. Leaning on the door, I pushed it open, just saving it from hitting the cabinet behind it.
"Mum, I'm home" I yelled.Silence filled the whole house.
I plodded into the kitchen, just to see my mum leaning against the wall with her arms folded tightly. Her dark blue eyes used to twinkle. Not anymore.
"We need to talk" she said with all seriousness.
Something was up.
She wore a washed out grey blouse with denim jeans. She also wore polished knee high boots.
I stared her in the eye.Sitting down on the wooden chair, I pulled my hair to my right shoulder .
"Yes?"
She also pulled up a chair to me.
"So.. Tyra. Your 20 now. Almost 21 and I think, well, I think you should be considering moving out."
"But-"
"Hear me out" she said , plopping her index finger to my lips .
"And I feel as though, if you don't do it now, you won't ever. I'm sorry dear." Her voice croaky and dry.
I had so much to say but I was speechless, physically and emotionally.
The only word I could push out was
"ok"
"And if it helps, I'll pay for rent and all that fun stuff until you can get... Back on your feet" she said trying to reassure me.My heart sank. Why would she do this to me? I Understand that I should move out but I don't understand why she is kicking me out."
Words flew around my head trying to jigsaw parts together.
"What did I do wrong?"
"What am I going to do?"
"Why me?"The silence was thick. I was struggling to breathe, let alone speak through it.
She broke it with her croaky voice again "I hope you understand"I felt as though I was going to throw up. Somehow I managed to force myself to nod.
I didn't understand. I didn't understand at all.
