You stood on Platform nine and three quarters with your parents, watching as students got onto the train. You were muggle-born and found the whole ordeal scary of discovering you were magical, going to Diagon Alley and finally leaving your parents to a school in Scotland. You didn't want to leave your parents but they had both supported you and helped you worry less about wizarding school.

"You will be fine" your mother whispered, sensing your worry. "We will send lots of letters and you can send us ones back if you feel inclined."

"or you could not and worry your mother" your father said laughing making your mother look annoyed at your father.

"Do as you please (y/n)" she said gently, "Now you had better get on the train"

You looked at your mom and dad and smiled, tears pricking in your eyes, however, you willed them away and wheeled your things onto the train. Your parents waved and you did it back as you stumbled onto the train and into the first carriage were a boy sat.

"May I sit in here?" you ask timidly.

"sure" the boy said, shifting himself closer to the train window, he held a toad in his cupped hands who ribbited slightly.

You looked out of the window to see your parents as the train jolted and you waved, seeing your mother crying and waving while your dad also waved.

The boy watched you shyly, wondering who you were as you sat and met his eyes and you both looked down. "I'm (y/n)" you said quietly.

"Neville" he answered.

"Is that a frog?" you asked suddenly.

"Toad" Neville corrected. "He is called Trevor. Would you like to see him?"

You nodded and went over to sit next to Neville to see the road that he held. It was green with mottles of brown and dark green.

"May I hold him?" you asked.

Neville smiled. "if you are careful" he said, slowly handing the toad to you. You held Trevor, he was drier than you expected. You smiled, looking closer at the skin of the animal as it wriggled slightly, making you smile.

"My grandmother gave it to me" Neville said.

"That's nice of her" you said, placing your cupped hand on your lap.

"My grandmother was so happy to find out I was magical" he said. "she thought I was a squib"

"Squib?" you asked, confused.

"A non-magical person in a magical household" Neville explained quietly like he was worried he was saying it wrong.

"Oh" you said, handing back the toad which took it as its chance to escape.

"Trevor!" Neville shouted.

"Oh god" you said, "I'm so sorry" you started to panic as you and Neville went after the toad who was surprisingly fast. As you ran after Trevor you bumped into a dark-haired girl in the same year as you both called Hermione who agreed to help you find the runaway. You decided to stick with Neville, worried you would get lost on the train without someone with you.

After searching and searching you could still not find Trevor, he had completely disappeared. Neville at this point was almost to tears as you tried your best to comfort him. "I am sure he will turn up," you said gently.

"I guess" he murmured, whipping some tears away.

As the train stopped you both got out onto the dark platform and walked toward some boats, following a tall bearded man who looked kindly at everyone. Slowly you all got onto boats, you sat opposite a group you hadn't met and you looked down, not wanting to get into conversation with them, feeling too worried too. Thankfully they did not talk to you, rather gaping at Hogwarts as you moved toward it over the lake. It was nothing like you had seen before, it was huge and looming in the dark, however, light streamed from every window, making it look like a giant lantern. You worried about getting lost in such a large place but tried to not think about that as the boats reached the other side and you got off back onto the dry land and followed Hagrid again up the stairs toward the castle.

The castle was warm and your bags were piled up near the door, ready to be taken to each room. You found yourself next to Neville again and you smiled slightly as a tall, sour faced woman stood in front of you and started talking. As she talked something caught your eye and you nudged Neville, pointing at the runaway toad which made Neville sigh in relief and grab him from the floor in front of the woman who stared at him so he withdrew next to you, worried.

After the woman called Professor McGonagall talked to you all you all followed her into the large hall where the professors and students sat. You gazed around in awe taking everything in as you walked toward the front and stood in a group with the other first years, waiting for your name to be called for the sorting. As you waited you gazed around again, noticing the ceiling and you opened your mouth in wonder. Your appreciation of the room was cut short, however, as your name was called and immediately your heart beat fast as you slowly got up onto the seat and sat in front of the school. You started to pick at your fingers in worry as McGonagall placed the hat on your head and you heard his voice in your head.

"Hello there" he said gently. "Ahh a (l/n)"

"What do you mean?" you ask in your mind.

"I remember sorting your great grandmother," he said. "It seems like magic goes through your family every three generations, you are a lucky person"

"I had no idea" you said.

"I sorted your mother into Hufflepuff I remember, however, I am not sure for you, you seem to contain all qualities for each house" he said. "However, you seem most like your grandmother"

"Hufflepuff!" it declared. McGonagall took the hat off you and you walked toward the Hufflepuff table as they clapped for you. You smiled, feeling welcome as you sat and Hufflepuffs introduced themselves to you. Finally, you felt at home.

You watched as Neville went next and after a second was sorted into Gryffindor. You clapped for him happily as he walked over to the cheering table of red-crested students. You wanted to be in the same house as Neville, as he was the first friend you had made, however, you were sure you could still talk with him, even if you were not in the same house as him.

The rest of the sorting happened, Dumbeldore did a speech, you ate the delicious food and then you went up to bed. You flump into bed and immediately fall asleep, the day is long and exciting.
