I was woken up by a phone call at 6 pm. My headache was killing me. I couldn't think about anything and i didn't want to do anything.
I answered the phone. My voice was shaky.
- Hey, what's up? i said.
- Hey el, you ready for tonight?
- Yeah yeah, don't worry, been getting ready.
- I'll see you there.I put on my black dress with fishnets and my heels and headed out. It was very cold but i wasn't allowed to wear anything else. I took my car and left for the meeting. He sent me the address by text. I was shaky. I didn't know what i was doing. This was my first time meeting these people.
The building looked old and abandoned. I needed the money. I had been basically homeless for over a year. I opened the big brown door on the side. I heard some noise. I wasn't sure if it was people laughing or crying. "I'm just anxious, i'm sure it'll be just fine" I thought. The man i had talked to on the phone approached suddenly. I met him at a party. He saw i needed money so he told me he knew how i could make money easily. I was drunk and very emotional so i agreed to meet him the next day. And now, the next day, i was seeing him again. He looked a lot different to what i remember him from the little memories i had from the previous day. "I see you actually came!" he said. My entire body shivered. "Yes, was i not supposed to?". "No, no, i'm happy your here" he said as he was smiling with a very odd smile and staring at me.
I asked him him about the money. I didn't want to be so blunt but i didn't have all day. He smiled again and told me to follow him. "My mother probably wouldn't be proud of me if she knew i was following random men in random houses for money" i thought. But i was desperate. We both walked into a small room, with comfortable chair and desk and a small chair in the corner. I was frightened but i was ready to do anything for my money. It wasn't just 100 dollars after all. This could buy me a small apartment. He told me to sit down on the small chair. I sat down and tried to calm myself. "What's the worse he could do?" i wondered. He made me drink some sort of really intense alcohol and i was completely drunk in a few minutes. He kicked the door and sat down on the edge of the desks. That was one strong desk.
- Alright, i'm guessing you want to know how to get your money?
- Well, yes...
- Alright, super simple. We're gonna do a little chain of events. So your not gonna actually do that much. You just need to find someone that will.
- Will what? What are you talking about.
- Oh sweetheart, he said, chuckling to himself, i need you to kill someone. My heart sank. Being homeless seemed way better than any kind of apartment if i had to do this. I can't even express how scared i was.
-Oh, no, i'm sorry, this isn't for me, i'm gonna go...
-No! he screamed, You're staying here! Or im gonna fucking kill you instead!
- I'm sorry... i cant... who even...
-Who you need to kill? Oh, just some random girl. You see, my boss will kill me if i don't kill who he wants. And his boss will kill him if he doesn't murder the person. And your part of it too now, enjoy!
- No... I can't... please....I was begging him to let me leave. I told this man i would do anything to leave and he refused. I didn't have a choice... Calling the police was impossible... I had to find someone that would kill this woman!
He let me go into the room next door which was covered in cameras and mirrors and there was one telephone. I was aloud two calls to find a victim to add to this chain or he would kill me with the gun he always had in this hand. I was crying. Who could i possibly call. Who would be ready to murder someone. There was a little paper with phone numbers you could call for food. There was only a Starbucks that was around 10 minutes away. I had no choice but to call them. I couldn't call 911 because there were two other men supervising me at all times.
-Hello, this is Starbucks, how could i help you?
- Hi, yeah, um... i'm from a charity called No More Broken Hearts. Essentially, we talk to people that seem upset in restaurants and help support them for free.
-Oh, well that's interesting! So what exactly do you want?
- Just give me the phone to someone that's crying or looks upset and we, at NMBH will help! The cashier was new to this job. She felt like something was wrong but didn't want to call the manager and get fired in case this was common. Her eyes saw a woman with mascara all over her eyes and i could tell she was silently crying. She was with a friend but she had went to the washroom. She told herself it was better than nothing and called the girl to the front.
-Hey, someone wants to speak to you! Some woman, probably in her early twenties, picked up the phone. I cut straight to the point. Emotional people were easy to manipulate. After all, that's what happened to me.
-Hi, this is El, kill the woman with short purple hair by next week or ill kill you myself.
-What...? I dont... sorry i'm kind of going through something.
- The address is 8608 Big Rock Cove St.
Middletown, NY 10940. Kill the woman. Or i'll kill you. Is that clear? I'll give you 20000$ dollars, by the way.The woman took a few seconds of pause and completely changed her tone.
- You know what? My ex and my friend have been lying to my face. I can barely afford my apartment and i was just fired from my job. I'll kill anyone, especially with that money.
I felt kind of bad, she was obviously out of her mind.
- Don't disappoint me, i said, in a strong voice.
I was still incredibly drunk.
