Lilies with big petals resonate with the
feelings of missing someone strongly.
"That looks nice."
You cursed loudly as you pricked your finger on the silver needle nestled in the yellow yarn. Noticing the small dot of crimson, Mai winced and quickly pulled out a chair beside you and sat down.
"I'm fine," you reassured her and pulled out a band-aid before she could go into "mom mode" and start fussing about it, which she tended to do a lot. She told you that she developed it after babysitting the men's volleyball team back at her high school.
After you met her boyfriend for the first time you fully understood why they were so necessary. Kenji Futakuchi was many things and mature was not one of them.
"What's that for?" she asked peeking over your shoulder, being careful not to nudge you so you won't prick yourself while embroidering again. "I'm not sure what to call it but it's sort of a sweater."
"That's an odd shape for a sweater," she commented, quizzically staring at the circular shape. "It's for a turtle." she stared blankly at you for a few minutes before turning away. "I don't think I want to know."
"It's for my friend," you told her anyway. "He has a pet turtle named Daisy. So I'm making this for her." you held up the neatly crocheted piece.
"I spent all weekend working on it. It's going to look like a daisy." you grinned excitedly as you resumed working. You just knew Aone would love it.
"You know I haven't seen you this excited in a while. Whoever this guy is he must be some friend," she eyes you suggestively while making air quotes around friend. You could only look away in embarrassment as you tried to over yourself.
"It's not like that. Aone and I are just friends."
"Sure you are she teased, then paused. "Hmm you know I knew Aone back in high school. He was a real sweetheart too." she smiled at the memory. Then scowled when she noticed you had once again zoned out and hadn't been listening to her, too focused on your crocheting.
She just shook her head and took out her textbook. 'It's probably not the same guy anyway.'
======
After two days of meticulously working between your study breaks, you had finally finished it. Considering that you couldn't keep a secret to save your life, you opted to not visit him until you'd finished it as to not ruin your surprise.
It surprised you just how much you ended up missing Aone in those days. You made a mental note to yourself to ask for his number when you left school that afternoon. With the two gift bags in hand, you skipped happily down the street, only stopping once you got to the cafe to buy the cupcakes. You didn't have time to bake them yourselves today so you hoped these would do.
The first thing you noticed when you walked in is how less crowded it was compared to this morning. There were only two people inside; both of which seemed to be doing their own thing by the peonies.
Which is why the second Aone caught sight of you, he practically ran to meet you halfway. The concern in his eyes surprised you as he threw his arms around you in a tight hug.
"Hey, there big guy. What's wrong?" you cooed, seeing he looked ready to cry.
"You didn't come for two days. I thought something happened to you," he whispered sadly.
"I'm sorry Aone. I'm okay I swear, I just didn't want to come by until I finished your surprise."
Now it was his turn to be confused. Before he could ask, you thrust the two bags out to him. Instead of opening it right away, he took all the bags in one hand and gently held your hand in the other, pulling you back into his shop.
He walked over to a new section you hadn't seen before and brought back a small bunch of white flowers.
"They're Lillies," he spoke before you could ask. " You use them when you've missed someone."
You gave him an apologetic smile as you took them. At the same time, Aone took your box and reached around, then pulled out the gift.
Immediately he smiled noticing what it was right away. You smiled back at him as your fingers subconsciously glided over the multitude of bandaids on your (non-dominant) hand. You were a lot rustier than you thought with your embroidering skills, and your poor fingers paid dearly because of it. But to you, it didn't matter.
You'd do it a thousand times over just to see him smile like that again.
