"So, Dylynn, how long have you been working at the specialist centre?" Shane asked her.
"Five and a half years now," Dylynn said proudly. "I started working there the summer before grade six."
"And they let you?" Charlene asked, amazed.
"I kind of begged them to let me work there. I told them I didn't want to be paid, I just wanted to sit there and organize files. My role expanded when Dr. Brkic asked if I would like to sit in on sessions with patients and take notes for the doctors," Dylynn explained. "My uncle thought it would be best for me to have an after school activity, but I wasn't interested in playing sports or joining a club."
"That's amazing," Charlene said.
"I guess," Dylynn said, flushing. "I mean, I started to get paid at 16, and my salary's increased because I've got my first patient now--" she glanced at Jesse-- "so it's nice to help my uncle out when he's in a tight situation."
"It's just you and your uncle?" Shane asked.
"Yup. I moved to live with him seven years ago," Dylynn said.
"Your parents aren't around anymore?" Charlene asked, not unkindly.
Dylynn shook her head. "Nope." She still remembered the day she found her father unconcious in the kitchen when she was ten. She'd called 911 and they'd taken him away from her. She remembered how she'd watched her father scream and cry into the phone at the police officer who had called him to say that her mother had died. "My mom got hit by a car, and my dad committed suicide because of it."
"I'm so sorry," Charlene said.
Dylynn shrugged. "Maybe it was all for the best. If it hadn't had happened, I would never have lived with my uncle, and then I'd never have gotten to work where I do."
"I think it takes a very strong person to be able to overcome all of what you've experienced," Shane said.
"Thanks," Dylynn said, ducking her head. "I really appreciate you guys inviting me over for dinner."
"Maybe next time we could invite your uncle too," Charlene said.
"He does work a lot, so I don't often see him, but I'd definitely ask him if you did invite him," Dylynn said, smiling at her. "Thank you. Dinner is delicious, Charlene."
"Oh, sweetheart, you are so very welcome," Charlene gushed.
Dylynn smiled.
"How often do you work?" Max asked her.
"I work a lot more now that I'm seeing Jesse four times a week," Dylynn said. "Each session with him is three hours, so that's already nine hours, and then I come in for two hours each day I don't have a patient to do filing and sit in on patient sessions."
"That's a lot of hours, when the hell do you find time to do your homework?" Jesse asked.
Dylynn laughed. "I'm a pretty diligent student when I have to be. I work around sessions and when I get home. I'm pretty dedicated to work, so I'm not usually the type to be found at parties. I leave projects 'til the weekend."
"Have you looked into any universities?" Shane asked her.
"Not really, I mean, at this point there's no way I could afford it, so I'm hoping for a scholarship and maybe Dr. Brkic could put in a good word for me," Dylynn said. She shifted her attention to the three boys. "What about you guys? All headed to the NHL?"
