Chapter 3

Maddi

"Mum stop fussing. I'll be okay today. I promise. If I need you I'll call okay?" Carter said as I unfolded the collar on his flannel shirt.

"Okay. Make sure you keep the oxygen tank with you and sit down if you feel ill." I said worrying. It was Carter's first day back at school since his diagnosis.

"I'll be okay mum. I promise. Stop worrying." He smiled and kissed my cheek before hugging me tightly.

"She's your mum it's her job to worry." Niall smiled ruffling his hair and sitting down to eat the breakfast on the table.

"I don't want her to be sick with worry though Uncle Ni." Carter smirked picking up his backpack.

"Yeah that's what I'm here for." He winked.

"Bye Carter!" Austin giggled hugging his brothers legs then bounding over to Niall.

"Bye buddy." Carter grinned and picked up Ava as she walked past.

"Bye princess. I'll see you after school and we can play dress up. Okay?" He smiled and kissed her nose. I watched her face light up and she nodded.

"Bye Cart. Love you." She whispered and snuggled into him.

"Love you too babe." He rocked her softly. "Mum." He whispered as she fell asleep on his chest.

"Yes babe?" I asked as I made the packed lunches.

"Her skin is boiling." He frowned. I walked over and felt her skin. She was boiling. I grabbed the thermometer and stuck it under her tongue as she slept.

"She has a fever babe. Give her here you can't get sick." I mumbled trying to take her into my arms.

"No I'll be okay. It's my sister I need to take care of her." He whispered kissing her forehead.

"Carter, you can't if you get sick you'll be back in that hospital bed. Its not good for you." Niall said and took Ava out of his arms.

"But." He started to cry, I pulled him into a hug.

"Don't cry love." I whispered trying not to shed a tear myself.

"Mum I don't want to go to school." He whispered.

"You don't have to baby." I mumbled and kissed his forehead. He looked in my eyes and sobbed.

"Please can we go have a cuddle in my room?" He asked innocently.

"Of course. Niall please can you take Austin and Darcy to school and put Ava to bed. I'll ring Ava's school." I smiled and he nodded picking Austin up.

"Come on little man." He smiled with one twin on each shoulder. He gave Carter a quick kiss on his forehead when he walked past.

"I want Dad." Carter whispered once we were sat on his bed and he was curled into my chest and played with his hair. The house was quiet with the low buzz of the TV downstairs of Niall and Demi watching some show and taking care of Ava.

"I can ring him if you want?" I asked and he nodded. I grabbed my phone and rang Harry and waited for the ringing to die out.

"Hello?" He grumbled, obviously just woke up.

"Hi Harry. It's me, Carter's in a pretty bad state and he wants to talk to you." I bit my lip looking down at him as he stared into space.

"Yeah just pass him the phone. What do you mean by state? Why is he like this?" Harry asked.

"I told him he couldn't hold Ava this morning because she was sick and he broke down crying. He stayed off school and honestly I don't think he should go back until he's recovered or he can drop out now. He's old enough." I whispered.

"We can talk about that another time. Put him on the phone." He spoke softly.

"Cart? It's your dad babe." I mumbled and passed him the phone. I got up off the bed and went to go make some hot chocolate for me and Carter as well as some food. 

I walked down the stairs to see Niall cuddling with Ava asleep and Ava was just hugging her teddy bear and Demi was on her laptop. 

"Hey Ava how you feeling?" I asked putting my hand on her forehead.

"I'm hot mummy." She whispered and yawned. I took her out of Niall's arms and put her on the work bench on the kitchen. 

"How about I give you some medicine and then we can see if Uncle Niall and Aunty Demi can take you to the park for an hour or so?" I ask her getting the calpol from the cupboard.

"Park?" She asked, her eyes lighting up. I nodded and put the medicine in the syringe it came with because she hated the spoons. 

"Yup. Open wide love." I smiled and squirted it in to her mouth. She gagged and shook her head. "Hey Calpol tastes nice! Like strawberries. Why are you gagging missy?" I asked tickling her under her chin. 

"It's yucky mummy." She protested and ran to go get Niall. 

"Demi? Please will you take her to the park for a bit?" I asked her. "She needs some fresh air." I sighed.

"Sure do you need anything from the shops?" She asked shutting her laptop and getting up.

"Just some chocolate or something for Carter?" I asked her and she nodded and gave me a hug.

"He's gonna be okay you know. He just got worked up because he cares about his sister and it upsets him that he can't take care of her." She reassured me.

"I know, it just breaks my heart to see him like that." I mumbled running a hand through my hair. I tied it up into a messy bun and pulled the draw strings on my jogging bottoms tighter. She gave me a sympathetic look and hauled Niall and Ava out the door, shouting a good bye as they left. 

"Mum? Please can Dad come round for a while?" Carter asked from the stairs.

"Sure." I smiled and went back to the kitchen to grab the hot chocolates and some left over pasta from the fridge. I put it on a tray with some forks and Carter's medication. I added another hot chocolate for Harry and added the marshmallows inside the hot chocolate before the whipped cream, just the way he likes it.

"Maddi?" I heard him call as he walked through the front door. 

"In here." I shouted putting the whipped cream back. 

"Oh. Do you want me to take that up for you?" He asked pointing at the tray.

"You don't have to." I mumbled. 

"I want to." He smiled and took the tray trailing up the stairs. Well that was... different. 

"Can we just cuddle?" Carter asked miserably. I nodded and resumed my previous position, only this time Harry was on the other side of Carter, rubbing circles on his back and holding his hand. 

Just like old times.
