Chapter VII: Sleep Like a Baby.
The insides of the prison seemed nice once you get rid of the damn walkers. The plan this time wasn't completely suicidal, Rick settled that a part of the group would stay in the area we already secured making noises to attract the walkers, and the other part would go inside on formation to kill whatever we could and check the cells.
The moment we step inside, Rick and Daryl leading the way, followed by Glenn and Maggie and then T-Dog and I, the roamers came stumbling our way.
"Stay in formation!" Rick instructed.
Daryl and Rick easily took care of the first walkers that came towards us, but we froze when three of them that may have been cops showed up wearing protective gear from head to toe. Daryl tried shooting an arrow, but it ricocheted back to the floor. We kept on fighting the ones we could and distancing from those we did not know how to kill.
"Hey! Look!" Maggie screamed as she jabbed a knife on the back of a roamer skull right under its helmet.
As it fell lifeless on the ground, T-Dog and Glenn quickly used the same method to kill the other two. We kept going, killing the ones that crossed our way until we finally saw where they all came from; one of the barred gates was opened.
"Eve!" Rick threw me the chains and the lock.
I stopped behind them while they went forward clearing the way, then I ran and pushed myself against the wall so they couldn't spot me. But the last part was what worried me. Behind the barred gate there were maybe fifty walkers and I had to somehow shut the inside. I took a deep breath and signed T-Dog I was ready, we both hurried to the side of the gate and he got rid of the mouths that attempted to bite my hands off.
"It's closed!" T-Dog announced.
We gathered in front of the door that led to the cells, still in formation.
"What if is full of them inside?" I said stopping Rick from turning the knob "Yesterday we only saw prisoners, but inside those gates were civilians and cops..."
The moment I finished my sentence I knew I shouldn't have opened my mouth, their eyes started wondering around the patio, I felt the fear hovering around us. Well done, Eve. Luckily Rick was persistent enough to ignore me.
"We don't know until we know." And he opened the door.
For my surprise nothing came hungry for us, instead the sound of the wind running through the hallways was rather unsettling. We kept our weapons high anyway, this life has taught us to wait for the worse at all times. Rick climbed the power station tower and got the keys to the cell blocks that were locked.
Once we inspected the area we closed the door that led to a dark corridor and the other cell blocks, and called everyone in. I chose a cell on the second floor, it didn't smell so bad as the others and not having any blood stains apparently anywhere was a big plus. The window right in front gave me the advantage of the view of the whole yard, and Daryl refused to sleep in a "cage" and took the spot right in front of my cell, what made me feel secure.
"Feels like home to me already." T-Dog appeared my new "room" door.
"Smells better that my dorm room in college." We both laughed.
I decided I deserved a rest after fighting the undead. I chose the lower bed on the bunk bed, I first examined it, making sure I wouldn't find anything nasty hiding in there and then I threw myself on it. The pillow smelled like sweat, but I was so exhausted I easily ignored it and fell asleep.
"You mind if I crash here?" I opened my eyes but it was so dark I couldn't see an inch in front of my nose "The hallway is too damn cold."
I was too grog to recognize the voice in the dark, but the moment I saw someone curled up in a sleeping bag on the floor I knew that could only be Daryl.
