The Reason (Bakudeku Songfic)

The Reason

After being pushed onto the stage and given a microphone, Bakugou awkwardly looked out at all the bargoers. The lights were way too bright and he felt like he was on display. For the first time, being the center of attention made his skin crawl. Hw was just about to turn around and ditch this stupid place when he met Midoriya's emerald gaze again. Even under the bright lights, he was able to make out Midoriya giving him a thumbs up.  The music began and he took a deep breath, preparing to get this over with. His singing started off shaky, mostly because he wanted to convey the message he'd wanted to deliver for a long time.

"I'm not a perfect personThere's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you"

His entire class went silent. They expected Bakugou to pick out a hardcore rock song of some sort, not a sappy song like this.

"And so, I have to say before I go
That I just want you to knowI've found a reason for me
To change who I used to beA reason to start over new
And the reason is you"

Bakugou finally looked out at the crowd instead of at the screen that was feeding him the lyrics and was met with an awestruck Midoriya. Midoriya felt his heart stop the instant he heard Bakugou start to sing. Does he mean me? Fat tears were building up in Midoriya's eyes and would fall at any moment.

"I'm sorry that I hurt you

It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away"

Bakugou's mind flooded with images of all the times he bullied Midoriya--pushing him down, calling him useless, telling him he would never achieve his dreams--and his heart felt heavy in his chest. He put more of an effort into singing the song, he needed Midoriya to know how he really feels.

"And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hearI've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be

And the reason is you"

Bakugou didn't take his eyes off Midoriya for one second at this point--even though he couldn't clearly make him out since the lights were changing with the beat of the song--and Midoriya was in tears with a big goofy grin on his face. The message was sent. And there was no going back now.

After the music ended, the bar was silent. A pin drop could be heard. No one knew what to say. Katsuki Bakugou of all people had just confessed his feelings to Midoriya in front of everyone. Sobering up and feeling rejection build inside of him, Bakugou ran off the stage and tore out of the bar, walking out into the darkness of the night.

Tears were welling up and threatening to spill by the time he made it to the patio. he sat down on the concrete bench and the tears started to fall, speckling the table with little wet spots. why the hell did he do it? How could he be so stupid? Not only did he make an ass out of himself, but now they all know he's gay. And worst of all, Midoriya knew of his feelings and there was no way he returned them. 

Bakugou was so caught up in self-loathing that he didn't hear the soft footsteps that were approaching him. He only noticed that there was another person there with him after they sat next to him. Bakugou quickly batted away the tears in his eyes and the ones on his cheeks. Once he did, the person next to him was revealed--Midoriya.

"Did you really mean it, Kacchan?" Midoriya's voice was quiet--like he was talking to a wounded animal. "Was it about me?"

Not wanting to be seen as vulnerable, Bakugou responded in the only way he knew how. "What do you think, dumbass?" His words were harsh, but the venom from before wasn't there. Bakugou noticed it, and he was sure that Midoriya noticed it too. The thought made his chest feel tight like he couldn't breathe. Normally, he'd rather blast the face off that damn Deku than be in this situation. But, for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to walk away--especially not when Midoriya was sitting so close to him.

Midoriya immediately began babbling on about the reasoning behind him making such as conclusion. Do something. Bakugou's thoughts screamed. It's now or never! 

In a swift motion, Bakugou grabbed two fistfuls of Midoriya's shirt, causing the green-eyed boy to let out a squeak of surprise. 

"Kacchan I-" 

"Shut up nerd." In an instant, Bakugou closed the distance between them and crashed their lips together. Midoriya let out another squeak, his eyes wide open. He couldn't believe it, his childhood crush was kissing him. Midoriya was too stunned to kiss back at first, causing a pang of sadness to fill Bakugou's chest once again.

"Um... well..." Bakugou's cheeks were redder than ever. He couldn't meet Midoriya's gaze. He waited for the rejection or even a slap.

Once Midoriya finally came to the realization of what happened and what it meant, his face flushed bright red. "Kacchan..." Midoriya leaned forward and pressed their lips together once again. 

The kiss lasted for a few seconds before they heard squealing and the sound of phone camera shutters. The rest of the class had come out to see where the two went and had witnessed their intimate moment. Bakugou abruptly ended the kiss and spit curses at them, threatening to blow up their phones if they didn't delete the pictures immediately.

After some congratulations and teasing--mostly from Kirishima and a very drunk Kaminari--the group decided that it was getting late and they all needed to be back to get enough sleep for the ceremony the following day. During the taxi ride home. Midoriya had fallen asleep and his head was leaning against Bakugou's shoulder. Bakugou just stared down at his other half lovingly, thinking about the reason he'd become who he was today. And the reason was Deku.
