"I am... proud of you, daughter. Should have told you... betrayed... the Bile..."

~ General Teng, spoken with his very last breath as he lay dying on the battlefield of the Battle of Dinesh with a crushed chest.

Backstory

He had leapt to his daughter's defense when Grahv had snapped at her, occupying the fight as Rollan held her back. He slipped on the bloody ground, giving the crocodile an opening to attack and bite him around the torso. Enraged, Meilin breaks free of Rollan's grasp and charges the Devourer and his spirit animal, driving Jodoboda's lance into the crocodile's lip. This causes Gar, who was upon the crocodile at the time, to retreat. By the time Meilin summons Jhi and runs to her father, he is already slipping away.

Review

These last words are heartbreaking to us as readers of the entire series, as he is referring to the Bile he replaced for Meilin's Nectar at her Nectar ceremony. We assume he didn't know the effects the Bile would have upon his daughter at the time he had replaced it, because a loyal father would never purposely give up his child as a slave to Gerathon. However, the impact remains on Meilin for the rest of her life. From her dreams to her mid-battle thoughts to the realization that brings tears to her eyes at the end of Against the Tide, his decision haunted her throughout the series. Both Meilin and the readers often wonder just how much of the final fight would have been prevented if only General Teng had left her Nectar alone. General Teng would also have been shocked when he found out what effects the Bile had. This may even be the reason he ran so readily into battle - he might have believed he deserved to die for Meilin after what he had done to her.
