It's been a long night shift thankfully I can go home in a couple hours well that's if I don't have anymore big cases...lunchtime rolled around and everything went smoothly I was headed to get something to eat before finishing my rounds and taking off but life never works that easy huh...just before reaching the cafeteria my pager suddenly went off so I rush to the doors waiting for the ambulance that arrived shortly after I found my way there.
"gunshot wound through and through the lower chest area" giving the paramedic a nod we rush the man in, I locate the wound and quickly grab a stethoscope while we are moving and listen to his breathing "okay by the sounds of it could have nicked his lung, it sounds like it's collapsing I need you to prepare an OR and page doctor Hernandez" the nurse gives me a nod going off and doing as I said while we rush to the operating room.
After a few hours we finally closed him up and managed to get him to stabilise "thanks for the help I appreciate it" I say giving Doctor Hernandez a nod as we make our way out of the room "your welcome good work as always, I didn't really do anything" I give him a quick thanks again and a small explanation of how his help was definitely useful before I head off to the waiting room.
"Grimes" I try to keep the tiredness out of my voice as I see a skinny woman with black hair shoot up along with a man in an officer's uniform they make her way to me along with a little boy who the cop told to go play with the other kids, leaving just the three of them. "Is he okay?" I give her a small tired smile "the good news is your husband should be alright, he had a punctured lung and a broken rib, we managed to get the air out and stop it from collapsing, he should make a full recovery however unfortunately he has fallen into a coma" she instantly pulls the man into a hug of relief before doing the same with me "thank you, do you know when he will wake up?"
Releasing the hug I go to answer when the little boy pulls on his moms shirt "is dad okay?" she looks down at him before falling onto her knees "yes sweetie he's okay, he's just going to be asleep for a while, do you think you could take uncle Shane and go play while I talk to the nice doctor?" the boy nods before taking the mans hand reluctantly and going off, I smile at the scene remembering my own little girl before a heavy sadness sets over my heart.
I give the woman a reassuring look before letting out a soft sigh, "there's no telling when he could wake up it could be today or in a week, in some cases it could take months, all we can do now is wait and monitor him, making sure he doesn't get an infection" she gives me a small smile a few tears in her eyes "thank you so much" with that I go to leave only to feel a tug on my coat "Miss is my dad really gonna be okay?" his eyes are slightly teary and face filled with worry.
I smile and see Lori giving him a sad look not knowing what to say so I bend down and give him a smile "your dad's a fighter and he's really going to be okay, he'll need you to stay strong and help take care of your mom can you do that?" he gives me a short nod and a small smile which I return but there's still that underline fear in his eyes that breaks my heart but giving me an idea.
"Alright then little man, so your mom says your names Carl?" he gives me another nod "yes Ma'am" with that I reach into my pocket and take out a small toy soldier hopefully this works I use to do this with Leah when she got scared or nervous her dad was in the army.
"Well Carl you see this little guy, he's name is General Aj, now I promise I will do everything I can to help your dad and make sure he's okay, but until then you can hold onto Aj...you know he's very special" his eyes are wide tears finally dry as he looks at the cheap plastic as if it's a peace of gold before looking up at me and asking "why is he special, he doesn't even have a gun" that's the same question Leah always asked, I give him a bright smile "that's just it he is so brave and so strong that he doesn't need a gun and until your dad wakes up he will protect you" he smiles and takes the little toy from my hand giving me a big smile giving me a quick thanks I ruffle his hair "now remember to keep him safe like he will you he's my treasure and I'm entrusting him to you" I wink making him smile, before running off to his mother and showing her the little toy.
She gives me a grateful look before turning her attention on her son again. That was 8 weeks ago hard to believe things have taken the turn they have, but I got very close to the Grimes family even Shane...tough I may have wanted to punch his teeth In a few times for hitting on me, but me and Carl got along great and Lori and I even managed to become friends which in itself is a rather odd experience for me since woman don't normally like me because of my looks which I think is ridiculous.
Things were going good Rick was healing great his ribs are fully healed but his wound got infection which seems to have finally cleared up so it shouldn't take to long from here to be fully healed which is great but he hasn't woken up yet so that has become a blessing and a curse since oh yeah before I forget to mention about 2 weeks ago the apocalypse stated, which is why I am currently savaging for food in the cafeteria not many shufflers, that's what I call the dead in the area anymore things have quieted down quite a bit the hospital practically deserted well this half is anyway.
After grabbing food I make my way back to Ricks room only to find an empty bed, panic setting in my body I grab my bag that has medical supplies and food in it while checking I have all my weapons consisting out of my bow and arrows my Smith M&P22 Compact complete with my silencer as well as a Glock26 also accompanied by a silencer, a few well 12 throwing knifes a dagger and hunting knife my husband got me I managed to find a baseball bat that's been great I managed to make it more lethal with some spikes so definitely one of my favorites.
After making sure I have everything I head out, it didn't take me long to find the man wondering around the park, jogging up I call his name practically giving him a heart attack "Rick, Rick Grimes!" freezing he turns to look at me giving me an up and down taking in all my weapons "w-who are you?" I give him a small solute and cheerful smile "Names Lillian Jones, you can call me Lilly tho I'm so happy your finally awake" the man gives her a quizzical look "right sorry I'm your doctor or was...well we have a lot to talk about"
"Doctors always walk around looking like a human Armory?" she lets out a small chuckle "no but the badass kind do" she gives him a wink making the man chuckle as she explains the end of the world his family and her promise to Carl they make their way to his house "so how are you holding up with all the new information" he gives her a side ways glance "I don't really know if I believe it to be honest..." he raises his hands giving a small sorry sorry motion at her exasperated face "I know I can see it but I don't know I just it's hard to fully accept it" his voice is gruff and she nods in understanding.
"Understandable, coming to terms with the end of the world as we know it isn't really easy...funny enough to me not much has changed" he gives her a 'really look' making her laugh. "well what I mean is, even though shufflers aren't alive their technically still human and humans hurting/killing humans isn't anything new...the previous world was filled with people who went around and did as they pleased, devouring others for their own gain, I guess to me the world was always somewhat been like this..."
Her eyes hold a darker look he finds it not to really suit her at all, much preferring her with the smile she seems to be permanently holding with that he gives a nod and contemplates her words, and the rest of the walk remained silent.
