By lunchtime, I had my answer. Aiden was opening up to me first, so I figured he would be the easiest to start with. I had already mentally prepared myself to go to his band's gig this weekend. It was so unlike me to do things with other people on the weekend, but it was all in the name of research. After getting a burrito from the cafeteria, I made my way to the quiet bench on the balcony. No surprise, River was already there. By the way his bruises looked yesterday, it would still be a few days until they healed. I sat down with a sigh and set my food on the bench before rummaging through my bag up and pulling out the ointment and bandages.
"So Mr. Student Body President, what excuse do you give for having a hood up in the building to hide the bruises all the time?" I asked as I held out the ointment and bandaids for him. He paused before pulling the hood off to look at me.
"You pried," he accused me. I shrugged, motioning to the things in my hand.
"I couldn't help it. Here, this will help it heal faster," I offered. He sighed in annoyance before taking it from me.
"People just assume I'm in the zone of studying really hard. When I have the hood up, I keep a book open in front of me, so no one bothers me-"
"Because they think you're studying," I finished for him before chuckling. "It's actually a stroke of genius, but then again, I would expect nothing less from the student body president," I smiled when I was done cackling. He rolled his eyes before attempting to put the ointment on himself. He was failing miserably.
"Give it here," I finally gave in with a sigh as I took the tub from him. I made him face me before applying the ointment on his eye and lip. I smoothed the bandaid over the cut near his eye and left the one on his lip alone. I put the ointment away before finally getting to my food.
"You didn't wear your glasses today," he noted.
"They were accidentally broken yesterday," I said in passing in between bites.
"Well, you don't look as terrible without them," he muttered.
"And everyone says you're a nice guy," I retorted. He scoffed before leaning back and facing forward.
"Don't you ever eat lunch?" I asked.
"I consider that a prying question," he answered.
"Want half of this burrito?" I asked. He shrugged and held a hand out. I took the other half of my burrito and handed it to him.
"I still can't figure you out," I muttered.
"No one asked you to. What's with you? Why are you so invested?" He asked. I sighed as I balled up the empty foil from my half of the burrito.
"I wouldn't say I'm invested, it's just... try thinking about it from my point of view. You get to a new school to find the student body president is secretly getting into fights on the side. You're telling me, that wouldn't peak your interest at all?" I asked hypothetically.
"Well what about you? You're always writing in that notebook. What is it for then?" He asked. I smirked slightly.
"My dad is Richard Lee, so I guess you can say I picked up a few habits from him," I answered honestly.
"Richard Lee, the writer?" River asked. I nodded. River only scoffed and shook his head.
"Figures, you're way too interested in other people's personal lives," he muttered.
"You asked," I reminded him. I stood with a sigh before leaving to go to my next class. I didn't even bother saying goodbye to River. I knew he wouldn't care either way anyway. I paused in the middle of the empty hallway as a text popped up on my phone. Surprisingly, it was from Trevor.
Trevor: Hey, whenever you get new glasses just let me know how much I owe you.
It was weird. I knew he said he would reimburse me for them, but I never actually expected him to follow through on it. I made my way to my next class, eager to get the day over with. My actual immersion learning started this weekend.
