[UNEDITED. I'M SORRY :'(]Chapter 3 - The Beginning of Change
I woke up to hear a few whispers and mumbled curses as I winced and slowly opened my eyes. I was in my bedroom, lying on my bed but I could barely open my eyes. When a sharp pain rushed to my side, I stopped in my struggle to move.
"What the..." I was crushed into a hug before I could finish my sentence and only relaxed when I smelt the familiar fragrance of my mother's citrus shampoo.
"Indigo, my baby..." Her voice trembled as she stroked my hair and rocked me back and forth. The arm that had held me in place was now gone.
"Mother?" Images of that night came rushing back to my mind and I felt terrible. "I'm so sorry."
She pulled away to look at me and managed a shaky smile before pulling me towards her again. "I'm just glad you're OK." She whispered again.
"How's Stacey?" My brow creased in worry as I thought about her. "Please tell me she's alright."
My mother stroked my forehead. "Stacey's fine, she's been treated for bruises that's all."
I winced again as my side and ribs ached. I could only wish that I'd been as lucky.
My father and brother towered over me, worry etched into their handsome faces. I pulled away from my mother's shoulder long enough to speak. "I'm sorry." I said again. My brother just shook his head whilst my father's facial expression shifted between worry and anger. He settled on the latter which wasn't good.
"Indiana, please move away from her." My father said as he pulled his wife by the shoulder. My mother released her grip making me feel exposed and vulnerable.
Everyone in the room went silent in anticipation.
"What were you thinking going out on your own?" He asked it calmly but I knew better. It was no secret that my father was always at his angriest when his voice was void of any emotion. His face looked as blank as a slate, concealing his true emotion.
Instinctively, I shrunk back slightly. "I, we..." I trailed off when I saw him shaking his head impatiently.
He looked close to snapping. "Indigo!" Everyone jumped when he boomed and I shied away from him as best as I could. My mother placed a reassuring hand on his arm and whispered to him.
"Bruce... this isn't helping, honey." She stroked his arm gently. It seemed to relax him slightly.
The room went uncomfortably silent as we waited for my father to regain his composure. When he opened his eyes again they were empty of any warmth and it broke my heart. He barely looked at me when he said, "You're grounded for a month. You're not to leave the house, and if you do all of your privileges will be taken from you immediately."
I gulped unable to think of a single thing to say. "Yes, father." He said left, leaving my brother and eventually my mother to follow.
When I thought everyone had gone I took a deep breath in and rested my swollen head against my pillow. I was about to go to sleep when I heard a small cough. I was surprised to see Carlos stood in front of me.
Immediately, I put all the pieces together. "It was you who saved us." I breathed. He only nodded once before sitting beside me in silence.
Vampires had a rule - one that we always obeyed. If we were saved by one of our kind, we owed them something in return. We would always be in debt to that person until we'd paid it back and there was no getting out of it.
