Monday. 19. July, a day like any others, I wasn't the type of guy to complain about routines, mine was quite alright compared to some friends who have crazy journeys around the world, I stayed in Brighton, I moved to this city over 3 years ago, U.K and more precisely, England was a country I always wanted to know.
I worked at a calling center, I wouldn't call it a suicide hotline, it's general, anyone who feels sad, lonely, who needs to talk, I'm the one to pick up. Even if honestly sometimes I feel like I could be the one calling the number.
But it's nice to hear from people that you helped them feel better and that you made them smile today. Even if it doesn't help my morals receiving all of this . . . I do feel bad for them and it is a bother on me.
« - Jay ? Man you're tired am I right ? » I opened my eyes to my coworker Kowalski, he had a rough past, but this dude was a total sweetheart.
I lazily nodded. Realising I fell asleep on my desk.
« - Dude, did you even sleep yesterday ? » He placed a cup of black coffee in front of me.
« - I don't like black coffee Kowalski. »
« - Then go get some milk then, I'm not your butler last time I checked. » He grumbled
« - Sorry man . . . It was a long night. What time is it ? » I softly yawned, leaning backwards in my seat, stretching my sleeping limbs awake.
« - You spent the whole night here again, damn. It's 6 am. »
« - Oh, so we should start working then. »
« - Well, honestly, our job is just answering the phone, and we still haven't received any calls for now, so you can slowly take your time to wake up as the koala you are. »
« - What's a koala ? »
« - . . . Anyway, first call for me. » Kowalski said in a melodious tone, standing up and going to his own room following the familiar sound of the phone ringing.
I don't think our job is just to pick up the phone, there's a lot more behind it.
I ruffled my hand in my hair, it was time for my shift to start again. After a few minutes organizing my desk and all my notes and pens, the melody rang in my ears.
Someone was calling. I quickly moved and took the phone in hand.
« - Hello ! You called Blue Bird hotline, my name is J.Schlatt, how may I help you today ? »
« - H-Hello . . ? U-Um . . . I- I decided to take a look at the number m-my sister gave me . . . S-she said it might help . . . »
The voice on the line was soft and sounded really quiet and sad to say the least. Not going to lie, it was kind of cute . . .
« - Alright, no problem at all if you want to talk, okay ? Please could you tell me if you're close to something dangerous right now ? »
« - Um . . . P-Pills for sleep . . . »
