Epilogue
Trees cracked and rustled behind the young red haired woman as she fled through the trees. Her eyes flicked from side to side as her feet flew across the earth so rapidly that there was not a single print left in the earth. However the hulking dragon in front of her was a big enough target for anyone to notice.
Turning her head to the side, the red head noted the familiar surroundings and whistled loudly. It drew sharp cries from behind and the crashing and cracking became louder and more rapid as their pursuers gave chase. Jet, upon hearing the whistle, glanced back over her shoulder, looked at the Atlantian and swerved to the side, slowing to allow the small woman to take charge.
Diving into low cave in the side of the hill, Aubrey was forced against the walls as the dragon squeezed through the narrow opening and settled awkwardly upon the floor. Aubrey, with the aid of Jet's strong and deadly tail, managed to pull the large branch over the hole in the side of the mountain, obscuring their hideout from view.
Crunches and rustles could be heard nearby which set her little heart racing. Holding her breath, Aubrey could hear the footsteps so acutely that she swore she could see the shadowy forms through the foliage before her.
"Any sign?" A gruff voice barked. Static crackled through the air for several long seconds before a muffled response came through. "I bet you it's just another giant house cat. I get fed up with all of these wild goose chases."
There was a sigh, more crackled words and then I could he laughed.
"Right you are. Do one more sweep and then call it off. My wife's making a roast."
The man outside paced a few more times before she heard his heavy gait clumping through the forest once more.
It was only when the cracks and muttered grumblings were so far away that they could barely be heard that the exiled Atlantian allowed herself to gasp in several desperate breaths of air.
"How, out of all the dimensions did we end up here?"
The red head kicked her feet against the floor of the cave and paced back and forth before Jet. The dragon kept snorting puffs of air from her nose, watching as it kicked up the dust causing it to swirl artfully through the air before drifting back.
"Why out of all places did we end up here in the 21st century? How are we going to find help here?"
Her ranting just earned her more disgruntled huffing and puffing from her scaled companion.
There were many minutes of tense silence between the two, Aubrey burning a hole in the floor from her constant pacing while the beady black eyes followed her each and every movement. Thus the perceptive beast knew the instant that something had changed. Unblinking, she watched as her friend tensed and stilled in her pacing. There it was, Jet thought with a sorrowful sigh. She received a quick look over her shoulder, guilt written on every inch of the fiery haired woman's face before she looked down at the ground. Aubrey refused to meet the pleading gaze of the dragon upon her back.
"My friend, you are going to have to stay hidden while I do research. I'm afraid that most modern men and women are not accustomed to seeing dragons flying through the sky." Aubrey sighed and approached jet, stilling before the silent beast. Her hand lifted by its own will and rested upon Jet's black smooth nose. "I have to find help Jet, I have to save him and Atlantis. Because if I don't then who will?"
She received no reply but Jet nuzzled further into her palm in acceptance.
And yet as her heart ached as she forced herself to say goodbye to the only friend she had. Because though her mum was out there somewhere, and the rest of her family, the young Atlantian knew the consequences of her existence becoming known by the wrong people would be catastrophic.
"We will save them Jet," She met the dark and fierce stare of her friend and felt something strong and powerful resonate between the pair. "I swear it. We will save Atlantis form those who seek to run it into the dust."
A tingle of magic ran across her skin, pulsing in acknowledgement of the words, filling the young woman with energy and purpose. She could feel it. This was her purpose. Now all she had to do, was figure out how exactly an ex-librarian went about saving an entire world.
