Hermione sat on the rug placed in her parents' backyard sipping on her tea. The day was surprisingly warm, the sun shone blindingly bright and the family was soaking up to the rare good weather- a welcome change from the usual East London gloom. Her mother sat beside her and the pair were having a merry conversation about Hermione's current office work. Her father was reading the newspaper but he too would chip in his opinion into the conversation from time to time. The bell of the microwave rang and Hermione walked inside to go fetch the cookies her mother had made.
Coming back out she heard her parents whispering urgently, "What do we tell her? I just don't want her to be upset over all this." her mother mumbled. Her father sighed, putting away the newspaper, "She deserves to know honey. Besides, she's happy isn't she? She's a mature, grown woman she can decide on her own alright? Just let her know."
Perplexed, Hermione cleared her throat, "Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear. Tell me what exactly?" she asked. Her parents looked startled and then worry clouded their faces.
Offering her a smile, Hermione's mother began- "The thing is sweetheart, Rachel's getting married in 3 months, and since the whole family hasn't been together for a while we've all been invited to her wedding a week prior. She asked me for your number a while ago but it slipped my mind and then we decided to ask you if you'd like to come."
Hermione beamed, "Rachel's getting married? That's wonderful, I'm so happy for her. Why were you hesitant to tell me though?"
Her father reached out a hand, clasping hers briefly, "Well she's offered you to bring a plus one and we both know that you're not ready to date just yet poppet, not after that bastard Mason."
Hermione smiled at her parents, warmed that they were so concerned for her. She thought back to her previous relationship, the constant abuse & lies she had endured and how she would always have to third-wheel with her friends everytime they all went to The Three Broomsticks. As happy she was alone, with Crookshanks for company of course, she wished to find someone who would like her for who she was. Her work was her priority but it would be nice to be someone's priority for once. Smart as she was, Hermione also knew that her parents would like nothing more than to see her content and she would do anything to make her parents happy.
"Poppet? You still with us?" asked her father, snapping her out of her reverie. Hermione nodded, taking her place on the rug once again. Out of habit, she began fiddling with her fingers which did not go un-noticed by her mother. "Hermione, is there something you want to tell us?" she asked.
Chewing at her bottom lip, Hermione launched into speech. "Mum, dad, I know that you both are worried about the plus one thing for Rachel's wedding but please don't fret. I've actually been seeing someone for a few weeks now and it's going pretty well."
Just as she had hoped both her parents were delighted. Her mother rushed to hug her, placing a soft kiss on her temple. "I'm glad you've found someone. I hope you're happy." her father told her, joining in on the hug. The family broke apart a few moments later and Hermione's mother asked the dreaded question. "Who is he?"
Hermione took a deep breath, "Draco. Draco Malfoy."
