Hello everybody. This is different than my usual chapters in this book, but I felt the need to write about this on here, on a popular platform where my message can be spread for the greater good.
So, I'm a Canadian citizen, and am Métis on my mother's side of my family. Métis people are half Aboriginal, half white, in my case it would be Scottish and Cree. Though I'm not fully indigenous and would never claim to be ever, my ancestors were, and I did grow up with the knowledge of their culture and ways of life. Though it is horrifying, I am aware of what the residential school system was like, and most likely have had ancestors who were put into that hellish monstrosity. It made me angry and upset, but the point wasn't driven home more so until last week. If you don't know, in Kamloops, British Columbia, a series of graves belonging to 215 Aboriginal children, were found on the property of a formal residential school. Some of these kids were as young as three, and died on the property. Please look it up further, if you want to know more.
Guys, I've never been so angry or broken-hearted in my whole life. Those kids didn't deserve any of that. To be taken from their homes, parents, cultures, and be forced to conform to patriarchal Eurocentric stereotypes and ways, just because they were different and those white people who created the system were intimidated by them. Why does it matter if somebody is different? There was NO reason to decimate entire generations of Indigenous peoples, just because they were minorities, or that they weren't like the white people. And using God and religion as an excuse is absolutely filthy, absolutely evil, and absolutely revolting. I was raised Christian, but left because it was so legalistic and confining, and I don't blame those kids for turning away, I don't. I'm not saying God or Jesus are bad, that's not what I'm here to do. I'm saying that it was disgusting to use them, good things, to justify those unforgivable crimes.
I hope that I don't lose followers or any of your support by writing this, but I'm just so hurt right now. This is NOT okay. I'll say it again. This is NOT okay. My government, our governments need to take the appropriate measures and steps to reconcile with those who were apart of the system, who lost family members to it, who are Aboriginal, no matter how much so, to make sure that systemic racism, that evil in humanity, that atrocity NEVER happens again.I'll close with a final sentence, that has been circulating around since the discovery, because it speaks volumes: EVERY CHILD MATTERS.
