Prologue
Jessie stood in her aunts' guest bedroom; it had been only 3 weeks since they had buried her parents. All she wanted to do was to curl up under the thick duck down duvet on the bed and return to oblivion. Instead, she was dressed in the blue and white checked dress with her new schools' emblem on it. At 15-years-old she really didn't want to be starting a new school. Her best friend Chelsie had stayed with her until she had to return home.
Her old school, her old neighbourhood was a 4-hour drive away, and instead of waking to the smells of her mother cooking her bacon and biscuits with a helping of grits for her return to school breakfast she was waking to a lonely room and an empty house. Her Aunt was a nurse who worked in the local hospital an hours drive from this sleepy little town, and every 3 days she would work the night shift leaving Jessie to be a grown-up and get herself to school. She was kind of resentful that her Aunt could take time off work, just for her first day at a new school. Angry butterflies danced in her stomach at the thought of meeting all those new people. Breathing deeply she looked out the window, the picture of the woods and the majestic mountains of the Rocky's bringing calm to her heart. She could do this, she had to.
Her phone alarm beeped at her reminding her that she had to get a move on. Running down the stairs to the kitchen she saw a box of granola on the table and a note: "Sorry I could not be there to help you today Jess, you will be ok. Milk is in the fridge, bananas by the bread box. Make it a great day. Bet" Aunt Betty hated her name and had shortened it to Bet saying Betty was a character from the Archie comics who was a goody two shoes and that didn't suit her at all. Just seeing the note bought a smile to Jessie's face.
Jessie had made it to school with plenty of time to get her schedule from the main office. Thanks to it being a smaller school, she also found her class with no trouble. Entering Biology 102 she looked around wondering if they had assigned seating, as the room began to fill with students it was obvious that they could sit wherever so she grabbed a seat by the window. Biology was her favourite subject especially learning about animals. She hoped that one day she could work at a zoo or become a veterinarian.
She felt a person sit next to her and when she looked up she saw amused green eyes looking back at her. The green eyes belonged to a boy who had black hair and a hard smirk on his face, he chuckled "Are you deaf or mute?" she shook her head and whispered "what?" his face kept smirking at her as he repeated "I said are you deaf or mute? I asked you if you were the new girl and you were just staring. Don't worry doesn't matter if you just keep smiling and looking pretty that's all girls are good for." He turned his attention back to the front of the class.
Her face went red with anger at his comment but he wouldn't see it, she turned and looked out at the mountains again trying to calm her heart. Jerk, she thought she was not just a pretty face, she was smart, and often top of her class. She would prove to him that she was more than a pretty face. By the end of class after answering 50% of the class questions and correctly she turned to the boy sitting next to her: "See not just a pretty face" he scowled at her, an all too familiar scowl. She had never had tact, or the ability to flirt. Instead, she seemed to turn off the opposite sex, so instead, she wouldn't bother at all. She knew what and who she was, and she was going to get it. As she picked up her bag to leave class she heard him mumble under his breath "too smart for her own good, no one will ever want you" she stiffened her back and kept walking but the words stung deep. Maybe if she had her mum and dad to assure her, he was wrong it would have been ok. Instead, the words swirled around her mind. As the weeks and months continued, she grew quieter, no one at the school seemed interested in meeting an outsider. Instead, she studied hard and went for long walks in the forests that surrounded her Aunts house.
