Chapter 7
Jessie was confused. The evening had not been too bad, Boyd had taken her to the local bar that specialised in steaks and beer. Two of her favourite things. He had been a gentleman, pulling the seat out for her, opening the door, all the things she would expect from a nice date. He had accepted her refusal to dance graciously, really nobody needed to see that train wreck. But there was something she just couldn't put her finger on, he was maybe trying too hard to be... It wasn't till they reached her home that may be a spark of his true nature came out. He demanded, "No man brings my woman flowers, who is he? Jessie!"
His woman? Really? It had been one date, she hadn't even accepted another one. The cowboy turned a heated look at her, silently demanding an answer. Her own expression hardened. "Now listen here, Boyd Hatfield. I am not yet your woman, this was our first date. Secondly, I have no idea who this secret admirer is as I thought he was you. You both turned up with the same bouquet of wildflowers, so give it a rest. We had a nice night, but I suggest you head home now." She could hear Henry's growl echo through the door at her pointed comment, she wouldn't even risk inviting him in knowing the immediate reaction the wolf had towards the man.
Pulling his hat off his head, the cowboy looked chagrined. "Sorry Jessie, I know you didn't do that on purpose. I just got jealous that a pretty little thing like you isn't mine and mine alone. I'll leave you be tonight but be ready tomorrow at seven. There's a grilled fish dish with your name on it." Before she could even say no, he had turned and strutted away, full of confidence and swagger.
She was frustrated and yet intrigued at why he would want to spend more time with her, even after she had yelled at him. Taking a deep breath she walked into the house, expecting to see some sign of annoyance, or boredom. The couch was torn up, or the rubbish bin strewn about the kitchen. The growling wolf stood, back heckled, eyes focussed on the door behind her as she looked around. Not a pillow out of place or a scrap of food pulled from the rubbish bin. "Wolfy, settle down, he's gone now." She walked over placing her hand on his head her fingers running through his fur. The rumble settled and he sat looking up at her his eyes pleading, not sure why the look hurt so much she decided it had been a long night and now all she wanted to do was go to bed.
Together they readied. She let him outside whilst she put the new bouquet of flowers into another vase. Then together they climbed the stairs to bed. She curled under the blankets her head hitting the pillow, the large mass of heat twirled making his side comfortable before resting up against her back. "Good night wolfy," she whispered. He yipped softly in response.
It never failed to surprise her that she was back here. It had become the only dream that occupied her nights. She wondered if it would change now that she was dating. But here he came with his confident stride, his thighs that held such power with each step. She smiled up at him, but this time his face was set, a look of hurt etched into his eyes. "Henry, what's wrong?" He sat this time for the first time facing her, his eyes down, his face set in concentration. She waited, understanding that he needed a moment to compose himself.
Hours seemed to pass before he finally looked up, determination etched along his features. Opening his mouth, to start his normal growl slipped out. Shaking his head, he once again tried, this time in a strange mix of growl and vowels she finally heard his voice. The gravel and deep tambre caused a shiver to radiate down her spine as he said, "I. Am. The. Wolf."
She sat for a long moment, her mind trying to understand, to comprehend what her dream was telling her. Was this just further confirmation that she wanted so desperately for her dream man to be the wolf? It was too much to be real, wasn't it?
