Chapter 4

The early start to the day left Jessie with a headache not to mention the embarrassment she had experienced in her dream. As she passed out breakfast to her resident's she noticed the wolf nibbling and scratching at his cast. It had only been a week since it was set, but she began to wonder if all his antics had damaged the work she had done. She knelt next to him and asked, "Is your leg hurting wolfy?" A soft yip was his reply. "Well it's no wonder with all the carrying on you have done this week. Let's give it an x-ray and see what damage you've done." She opened the door but was surprised as he stood and walked awkwardly out of the cage. "Really that is not going to help mister" Standing by the table he looked at her, raised an eyebrow and huffed.

"Cheeky sod," she mumbled to herself before bending down to lift him up onto the table. She struggled slightly at the added mass he had gained. "Well, that's a good sign. You're gaining weight, but I might not be able to lift you for much longer." His soft yip of reply had her chuckling. She pulled the x-ray machine over as he lay down on the table pushing his leg out for her. He continued to amaze Jessie, daily he showed more signs of intelligence not normally found in wolves or any animal for that matter.

After the x-rays developed she stood at the lightbox a puzzled look crossing her face, a noise came from the front room, "Hey boss I'm here, are ya decent?"

Wolfy growled and began to move to stand, Jessie moved over to him and placed a hand on his neck, just a small amount of pressure applied as she said, "Remember what we talked about, now lie down." She heard his whimpered protest, but he obliged her lowering his body.

Breathing deeply in relief she called back out, "Come in Joe, wolfy is on the table but he has promised to behave."

A head popped around the corner, eyes big as Joe said gently, "Are you sure he won't rip my head off?"

Wanting to show Joe he was ok she turned to her new friend and said, "are you going to be nice to our friend Joe?" A few seconds of silence dominated the room before he reluctantly yipped his eyes softening at Joe.

"Unbelievable! Jessie, what have you done?" Joe breathed as he gingerly entered the room.

Jessie smiled, her hand continuing to stroke her wolf's fur, "If you think that is amazing come and have a look at his x-rays." She waited till Joe had moved past her before following. "Now tell me Joe how this x-ray could be from a crushed ulna and radius on the right leg just 5 days ago? I can't even see the brake lines." They both stood puzzled until a sound came from behind them, the wolf sounded like he was laughing or choking Jessie could not work out which.

She walked back overcrossing her arms over her chest and glared at him, his eyes seemed to sparkle with amusement at her. "Seriously what are you?" she huffed, he lifted his eyebrow and stared back almost challenging her to make the connection, but still she didn't, no wouldn't it was too much and far too fanciful.

Joe stood off to the side playing with his fingers as he voiced, "You know there have been myths about magical creatures around here, maybe he's one of those."

Blowing out a breath Jessie decided it was now or never so she requested, "Ok, if you're a magical being, maybe even a werewolf, turn into your human form. At least then I will know I am not going crazy." An odd look came over his face at her request, his eyes filled with what looked like sadness before he laid his head down. Her heart was going crazy, it felt like it was going to pump out of her chest at the thought that maybe the wolf was her dream man. But his reaction, and seeming inability to change squashed that fanciful idea.

"Ok Joe, enough of torturing this poor creature, I think we need to remove the cast. I will need your help." She ran her hand over the wolf's neck and side, leaning down she whispered, "It's ok, whatever you are I will look after you. Now I will need to sedate you to remove your cast. The saw can be tricky and I don't want you to flinch, Ok?" This time a look of resignation was in his eyes, even a dullness she had not seen before, it was almost as if he had given up. A soft yip rumbled from his head which was now lying flat on the table. Worried about his sudden lack of alertness, she quickly checked his heart and seeing as it beat strong in his chest she walked over and retrieved the sedative.
