Footsteps walk quietly along the sidewalk. The clack of heels bouncing off the ground. Raindrops hitting the umbrella before falling off. Looking up, the cathedral stands in all of its glory. It seems majestic but yet restrained. As if it hides secrets. Even now does it still comforts me despite daunting me. I stop for a second and take one last look around me. No one is found to be in the streets. Not even cars can be heard on this dark, rainy night. Everything was silent except for the thunderstorms echoing from the clouds. A sense of distress can be felt within me.
Turning back in front of me, the two wooden doors stand tall. Designs flow all over with a mosaic window on top. Putting my hand on the door, I knew this moment would change the path I take. The decision I make inside would decide everything after this. With this confession.
Pushing the door open, creaking can be heard. Probably because the doors are so old and how many people go to the church. Peeking through the doorway, candles sit on high stands. The flames light up the majority of the room but still have a dim, calm atmosphere. I stepped in quietly and closed the door behind me. Walking in, the arches are a lot noticeable. They go all the way to the ceiling. Paintings can be seen at the very top and some even go to the middle of the ceiling. The rows of stands all face towards the back of the church where the cross is. Every row has a bible, a book of hymns, and this month's activities program for the church. Everything felt all so familiar. The times that I spent suddenly felt like a distant memory.
To the side of the church, I can see the booth. One side for me and one side for the priest. The light on the priest's side is on indicating that he's already in there, waiting for me. My feet felt like they were stuck in place. I tried my best to move in front of the booth. Eventually I manage to get there and close the curtain behind me. Everything led up to this moment. I couldn't avoid it. I had to truth because that's what I was taught.
"Dear Father, I have come to confess my sins and to reflect."
"What is it that troubles you, my child?" a voice answers.
My heart races, pounding hard against my chest. I can feel the ratting of my ribs against the sudden sprint that my heart has started. The feeling of anxiety and being intimidated flows through my veins. The ugly feeling of guilt rises in my chest before Him. It sits as black goo that continues to fester within my soul. What does one say to God about one's sin? What if one does not perceive it as a sin but a way that they could be truly happy with someone? Goosebumps begin appearing all over my arms. Fear starts to take over. A lump sits in the back of my throat. Anxiety blocks all the confidence of telling the priest what my sin is. I can feel myself trembling before the words have spilled out my mouth.
"Father, I have fallen for someone that I should not have. Someone that even God would be disappointed in the actions I have committed." Dread heavily sinks in with the guilt within me.
"Who is this person that has made you fall? What is that God should be disappointed in you?" the priest responds calmly.
The questions start moving around in my head. Slashing through the forest of memories. Moving faster than a bullet. My mind fled to the time when it all happened. Back when there was just me. Back when the arguments and disagreements happened. Back when the disgusting guilt didn't sit with me every day. Back when I first met her.
