I despise college parties.
There's something about disgusting bathrooms, inappropriate dancing, and spilled alcohol that strikes a nerve. Calum, however, did not exactly see my point regarding the whole situation. He'd always tell me I was being too cynical, and that I'd regret not attending at least one event in my college years.
He might've been right, but I can't test that theory out now, can I? Between choosing an outfit and applying winged eyeliner, I had too much on my hands to be giving him girl advice. Which he decided to ask for as I was getting ready for the night of disaster.
"Should I ask permission to hold her hand?" Calum asks, leaning against the bathroom door frame as I sat on a stool, staring into a hand held mirror, and applying mascara.
I scoffed, "I mean, hopefully she doesn't slap you if you do, but girls like spontaneity." His eyebrows furrow as he mouths the word to himself, nodding his head. Rolling my eyes, I continue, "Just don't touch her butt, and you're good."
Calum perks up, "Cross my heart." He smiles, joyfully, but I knew he took my words to heart. He thought for a moment, and said, "Do you think she'll like me?"
I nod, without hesitation, "Of course! If not, you always have Agnes. She's still asking me for your number, by the way." Agnes lived a few floors above me, and she sat a few seats away in my creative writing course. She was a petite, with short black hair, and had a serious case of resting-annoyed-face. She was adorable, because of the way she smiled -- all happy and carefree. Ever since she saw Calum drop me off at the class, she has had a huge crush on him.
At first, Calum thought it was incredibly sweet, and accepted her flowers and chocolates. He invited her to lunch with us, which was just a friendly hangout (otherwise I would've been the third wheel, and I refuse to be), but she took it as a date.
Agnes didn't skip a beat; heart shaped cookies on valentines day, a mixtape on Christmas -- the complete package.
Calum was nice about it, but I knew he was getting freaked out. We'd devised a plan, which had two parts. Plan A: convince Agnes of the existence of Calum's long lost love from Norway who had found her way back. Or if all else fails, plan B: tell her that calum is not interested and move on. i'm on team plan B.
"We're still on plan A, right?" Calum asks, nervously. He never liked hurting a girl's feelings, but I vehemently argued that he is putting off the inevitable.
Calum rolls his eyes, "She really isn't that bad," He crossed his arms over his chest, giving me his infamous I-am-judging-you look, which I hated, among other things.
"Cal, she printed a picture of you and me off facebook, cut me out of it, put herself in, and put copies of it all over her bedroom door. It isn't healthy, and we're enablers!"
He raised an eyebrow, "You do that with boybands."
"There's a difference!" I argued, which didn't really help my case.
"If this whole Jenna thing doesn't work out, I could give her a chance." Calum wondered, and he was being serious. I looked at him, weery eyed, and nodded.
"Anyway," Calum sighs, attempting to change the subject. I stand up from the stool, adjusting my hair, which was a disaster zone, might I add. "Luke Hemmings seems to be of your interest."
"He is not of my interest." I lied, licking my lips, and grabbing a hairbrush from the drawer. "He's nice."
Calum smirked, "Oh, well, that's not what he said about you."
I jumped up, the words spilling quickly out of my mouth before I could stop them, "What did he say about me?" Oh, damnit. Nice one, Leena. Play it cool.
"Mm, nothing." Calum teased, and I hit him in the arm. "He said he thought you were nice."
"Just nice? Or nice nice?"
Calum shrugs. reaching his hand over to play with my curly hair. He pulls a few strands before continuing, "Luke is great, okay, but he has some things he needs to deal with, and I don't want you to be stuck in the middle of that." I only nod, knowing that Calum wouldn't tell me anymore.
"We're friends." I say, simply. "I don't know him all too well, anyhow."
Calum smiles, "I know, Lee." He leans over, kisses me on the forehead, and turns to leave. Before doing so, he mutters, "Just be careful."
Jesus, which romantic comedy did I get sucked into?
