*cough* *cough*

Continuous coughs fell from my mother's lips, she's been sick for the past few weeks and has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
It breaks my heart seeing her in this state
"Y-you don't have to do this y/n, you s-still have school works to-" She was cut off when she coughed again only this time it came with blood

I widened my eyes and hurriedly grabbed a clean cloth and wiped her mouth and hands " Mom it's ok, I want to take care of you. After all that you've done for me and for our family, this is the least I can do. " My mother smiled at me, the sparkle in her eyes slowly fading as time passes. I used to feel joy whenever I'd like into her eyes, she felt like home, my home. But now seeing that my home slowly crumbles apart breaks me piece by piece. "You're stubborn just like your father, but that was just one of the qualities that I loved about him. You remind me so much of him y/n/n" I could see that she was trying her best to blink away the tears but it seems like they betrayed her, soon she was crying before me and I just hugged her and told her that everything was gonna be okay. Just like what she did to me when I was still young.

When my father died, it's like half of my mother died as well. But my mom was a strong woman, despite the pain she worked hard just to provide for me. There were nights when I caught her crying while holding a photo of dad, sometimes she would just stare blankly at his picture without knowing that tears were breaking out in her eyes. It really took a toll on her, on us; that's why when we found out that she had lung cancer I had no choice but to drop out of school because we no longer had enough money to pay for the books and other stuff that was necessary in order for me to study. Even though I was granted a scholarship at my school that alone wasn't enough to make me stay in university

I loved being a medical student but my mom's health comes first, there are many courses out there but I can never find another mom. I never told her what really happened to my studies, she would be devastated if she was to find out. She would blame herself and I don't want that

I wiped the tears in her eyes and waited for her to sleep and when I saw that her breathing was stable and soft snores were heard I kissed her forehead and left the room

"Yooo y/n! " Lisa, my coworker said as she slung her arm around my shoulder

"Hey lis" I greeted her with a small smile, she furrowed her eyebrows "what's up with the monotone? " I sighed and sat down luckily our shift just ended and I could finally get some shut eye soon "how's auntie Dara? " She asked me worry lacing her tone "She's getting worse lis, I -I don't know how to pay for her medical needs anymore they just keep getting more expensive and even if I work myself to death I won't even come close to affording even three months of her maintenance" I said and buried my face in my hands

Usually Lisa would tell me words of encouragement or things that would make me feel better but when I heard nothing but silence I slowly lifted my head from my hands and looked at her; she had an unreadable expression on her face.

"I might have a solution to that" She told me and I was confused but also curious as to what kind of solution would she propose
I urged for her to continue "you know my friend Nick right? He needs two more people to join in his gig" She told me but this time with a worried expression, that guy Nick is bad news, the moment I heard Lisa say that it was a gig from him I straight away declined "I appreciate you looking out for me lis, but Nick? Seriously? That guy is bad news, and I'd rather work a decent job to afford mom's bills than to murder who knows who" I told her and her expression still remained the same, "look y/n, I know you wouldn't agree to this in the first place but think about auntie Dara. I know this job isn't the best out there, but it's your only shot at saving auntie. I know that you know that you'd do anything for auntie. This gig costs more than what you earn in a year, it's that big y/n. I'm not forcing you to take up this gig but just think about it ok? Hit me up when you've decided" She gave me a brief hug before calling a cab
