"Did you have Mcdonalds in Africa?" Did you live in a hut?" Did you have a pet giraffe/ elephant?" "Have you seen snow before?" " you speak African?" "I'm as dark as you" How long did it take to do your hair?"
Nothing to see here, just a list of few of the ignorant questions I was asked when we first immigrated to the US. One thing I regret the most is not giving them some dumb answer. like " yes, I took my pet elephant to school every day" "yes, we took spear classes at school to learn hunting for food." "Yeah, we had snow, but it was not white it was purple". Dang these responds would've been so good.
In reality, I've never seen an elephant a day in my life. I lived in a three-bedroom house, with two bathrooms owned by grandma (who lived in the US at the time). We own chickens, goats, and dogs. Had a generator for electricity and had a huge land as our background and about 5-6 mango trees. No, we did not have a McDonalds, if that's what being developed is, I want no parts. And another important thing is we don't have processed food, so all our meals were cooked and eaten the same day. Freshly cooked meals every day, was immaculate.
Not only are Americans ignorant about other countries, especially developing nations, they could careless to learn and educate themselves about other people's cultures, believes and systems. They think the world revolves around them as a nation and that they are "the greatest country in the world" If you must keep reminding yourself that you are the greatest nation in the world, then maybe you're not.
Don't get me started on the education system. If a 13-year-old immigrant child from Africa of all places, can come here and excel in the American school system with excellence and top all the American kids, you all should think your idea about what makes a country developed. We may not have a McDonalds, Starbucks, flat screen TVs, full excess to WIFI, lots of stores, proper roads, proper schools, or hospitals. But we are not stupid, we may not have what you all have, but we are happy people, who make the best out of what God has blessed us with.
