Chapter 1

I will never forget the day that Dimitry Smith got arrested. It was just like any other day in class. I was sitting up in the front row of Mr. Dame’s classroom, being the nerd I am, and Dimitry was sitting in the back row with his group of friends, throwing paper balls at the back of my head. Ever since the sixth grade they have made it their mission to annoy me in every way possible. I choose to just ignore it. I mean, what kind of stupid person is going to stand up to someone like him!

I was doodling on my notebook, when the principal, Mr. Lions, came through the door along with my dad, the chief of police.

“Dimitry Smith, please come with us.” Mr. Lions said in a calming tone, but from his body language you could tell something was wrong.

Before anyone knew what was happening, Dimitry was out of his seat and running down the halls with my dad and pretty much the entire student body chasing after them. Well, besides me of course. Me, being the smart girl that I am, went to the window just in time to see Dimitry burst through the door.

There had to be at least 6 police cars out side the door waiting for him. Dimitry halted for a moment, and that’s what cost him a clean get away. Before he could get his footing to take off again two police officers tackled him, causing hitting his head against the ground. I  leaned my head against the window and got a glimpse of my father saying the words that I’ve heard him say time and time again.

“Dimitry Smith, you are under arrest. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law.”

With that the police officers threw him into the back of my dad’s cruiser. The teachers were trying to get the students back into their classes to continue the school day, but it was useless. Even after all the students went  back to class, there was no point in the teachers even trying to teach. Everyone was talking about what happened to Dimitry, even me.

“What do you think the ass got arrested for this time?” I said sitting down my lunch tray next to Dylan, my best friend.

“Who knows, but I just hope that he gets put away for a long time.” Jody said from across the table taking a drink out of her smoothie.

“I’m just happy that now Scar isn’t going to be tormented by them anymore.” Dylan said wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“Thank God!” I screamed at the top of my lungs causing a chorus of laughter from my table and a bunch of strange looks from others trying to enjoy their lunch.

The day progressed. Then a week. Dimitry’s friend’s started wearing shirts saying “Free Smith!” on them. No one really knew what Dimitry was actually arrested for. There were rumors saying drugs, or vandalism, but then again there were also rumors of him stealing a unicorn from a mad science lab. So, it was very unclear of what he did to get him put away, and my dad wouldn’t even tell me!

After about two months his friends stopped wearing the “Free Smith” shirts. and soon, he was old news.

That was three years ago. If I ever hear the name Dimitry Smith it will be too soon. Ever since he got arrested his friends stopped tormenting me, and I’ve been able to actually enjoy high school.

“Scar, come down here!” I hear my dad scream from the bottom of the stairs.

Sighing, I roll off my bed and close the magazine I was reading. Slipping on my slippers, I trudge down the stairs.

“Yes daddy?” I said grabbing peanut butter out of the cupboard and a spoon out of the drawer.

“Do you remember Dimitry Smith?” He asked me.

Yuck, I hate the name. “Yeah what about him?” I said with my voice full of disgust, sticking the spoon into the peanut butter.

“He’s getting out of Juvi in a few days…” He said not making eye contact.

“Yeah? Why does it matter?” I ask him shrugging my shoulders.

“He’s going to come live with us for a while so he can finish his senior year with you.” He said cringing as he said that.

“Excuse me. I think I’m hearing things. Did you just say that the delinquent boy that has tormented me since the beginning of time is going to come live with us?” I said dropping my peanut butter.

“Yeah, but the three years in juvi had to have helped him. He’s getting out on good behavior. He didn’t have anywhere else to go so he could finish school. I agreed that he could come here.”

“How could you dad? You know I hate him, you know how he treated me. Why would you let him come to our home?” I asked feeling outraged.

“He is coming to live with us for a year and that is finial Scarlet!” He said getting angry. “Tomorrow morning we are going to have breakfast with him and he is coming home with us whether you like it or not.” He said ending the conversation.

“Whatever Dad, but remember if you find me dead, look at him for answers!” I said walking back up stairs with the peanut butter in hand.

I cant believe that my dad would force me to live with this… this…this delinquent boy! I’ve always been a good girl, I’ve never done anything behind my dad’s back. I get good grades, and I don’t argue, usually… Why would he do this to me!

Crawling into bed, I slowly drift off to sleep.

“Oh, look at the little nerd girl.” Dimitry said from behind me.

“What the hell do you want Dimitry?” I turned around looking him dead in the face.

“I just wanted to tell you that you look hot. You know, besides the terrible hair and uneven face. Have you ever heard of make up? Well, you should use it.” He said cackling with his friends.

“What ever asshole.” I said turning back around trying to not let him see the tears in my eyes.

The next thing I know my back is pinned against the wall with his hand on my throat.

“Don’t you ever walk away from me nerd girl. This school is a board game. You are my pawn, you do as I say.” He growled in my face.

I shrink back. All of a sudden there is a stinging on the side of my face. I stare up at him with wide eyes.

“Did you just slap me?” I asked him astonished.

“Yea, what are you going to do? Go tell Daddy on me?” He said turning around to walk away. “Yeah right! Like you could ever get the courage to do that.” He said laughing.

I woke up with a jolt. This time it is going to be different. I’ve changed while he’s been away. I’ve grown up. I’m no longer the little girl with the frizzy hair and the glasses. I have friends now. I’ll be damned if I let some good looking bad boy take that away from me.
