the famous marauders walked hogwarts another year.

sirius and remus were officially dating. james had stopped pining over lily evans (who had come out as lesbian over the summer). and peter pettigrew was... peter.

i had observed them over the years from my own friend group. as a gryffindor, i got to constantly watch their antics. i was close with lily, which meant i got to watch james' attempts to flirt with her.

i'd had a small crush on the black haired boy for about 4 months now, but i'd swept it under the rug.

i wouldn't actively seek him. but if he asked nicely, i'd go out with him.

but he'd never go for a girl like me. especially when he had the whole school at his fingertips.

i was in, in the nicest way possible, curvy.

and lily was not.

i never got my hopes up, and liking someone like james would never work out for me.

"earth to y/n/n!"

i snapped my head up, realizing marlene was trying to get my attention.

"oh, hello," i say.

marlene shakes her head with a smile on her face. "you looked pretty deep in thought over there," she says.

i shrug and pick up my fork. "just thinking," i say.

lily raises her eyebrows. "about what?" she asks.

"or who?" dorcas adds in.

i feel my cheeks heat up at her words.

"ooh she was thinking about someone!" mary says.

"who is it?" marlene asks, leaning in a bit.

"i'm not telling," i say.

"oh, come on," mary says, shoving me playfully.

i blush even harder. "let's talk about this when the entire school isn't around us."

"ooh," dorcas says. "y/n/n's got a crush."

"do you?" lily asks.

"it's really small and stupid, and he wouldn't even-"

"you like a man?" marlene asks.

"unfortunately," i say.

everyone laughs.

"fine. we'll talk about this later," lily says.

"but don't act like you can't say anything once we get in our dorms!" dorcas says.

"YOU LIKE JAMES?" mary shouts.

i clap a hand over her mouth. "could you please not shout it?" i ask her.

"i could see you two together," lily says.

marlene laughs. "you called him an obnoxious toe rag, lils," she says.

"that's when i thought i was straight so i was trying to justify my lack of attraction. now i realize—"

"it's too early in the year for fancy words, lily,"dorcas says.
