It was the next afternoon. Ray made a confused look at Sam when the man pressed the elevator's button to the fifth floor when they're supposed to get off at the top floor, but he just followed his boss nonetheless. Ray was never one with many words and his expression could rarely be read but it was a different case for Sam; what he felt inside, he would show. When it came to a man named Lin Zi Hong, Ray could easily decipher the meaning behind each smile, each pout and each frown.
"What are you trying to do?" Ray asked as he pulled Sam's arm when they were near a familiar door.
"You can speak now huh? I thought you've become mute or something."
Ray responded with a cold stare. Ray had actually been quiet since Sam insisted to do what he did to the other man yesterday. He tried his best to talk the man out of it but it was to no avail. Instead of heading to the room where Yang Yu Teng's father was in, Ray pulled Sam towards the staircase instead. While just now they were at the hallway, Ray had kept his voice hushed but now, he raised it a few notches higher.
"What you did was wrong. Uncle Lin would not let you go if he ever find this out and that boy.." Ray had been calling Sam 'boss' but in reality, they had known each other since they were kids and he regarded watching over Sam as his way to repay Mr. Lin for taking care of him. He often wondered why Sam didn't grow to be like his father, a gentleman.
"Are you pitying that man, Ray? Have you forgotten what he did to me!?" Sam was infuriated. More so when Ray who would normally let he do whatever he wanted, tried to teach him right from wrong.
Ray immediately softened up at the mention of the past. Right, he had seen a gentleman Sam. He had seen the reflection of Mr. Lin in Sam for a few years but that unfortunately stopped the day his marriage was ruined. But would Ray say he did not deserve it at all?
"I know, Sam but isn't it enough what you did to him? Don' tell me you don't feel bad too.""I'm not. The only thing I feel bad about was not making him pay sooner." Sam said as he turned towards the hallway again, not wanting to hear more from Ray.
Ray sighed as he followed along but Sam did not head to the room this time, instead, he went straight to the nurses' counter on the other way.
The couple of nurses there stood up instantly as they saw Sam. They never really had a good look at both Sam and Ray; afterall, only the nurses in the VIP rooms would get such chances. Hastily, they greeted, "Good afternoon Mr. Sam."
Sam did not bother to look at the two nurses. "Get me the doctor who was treating Mr. Yang in Room 506."
Later that afternoon, Yang Yu Teng grunted as he got off the bus jammed with people near the hospital. His ill-fitted and worn out blue suit was unbuttoned and the backpack he paired with it was really an eyesore to the onlookers, if they would even glance at him. What happened to him the day before should be more than enough for him to take a day or even a week off, but he was not a man that could afford such luxury. His family was not all that bad a few years back and even if it was, Yang Yu Teng was a bright student and the only thing holding him back from going further in his study and career was his ailing father, not that he was thinking of it that way. He was content; afterall, even if his wage as a Japanese Language teacher at his school could barely pay for his and his father's expenses, it was a job he found much happiness in.
He ran across the street as the light turned green and constantly looked at his watch which was already pointing at 6. Normally, he could leave the school after 3 p.m but the meeting was dragged that day. He was supposed to be at the hospital before 5 since the doctor's last round at his father's ward would be around that time.
Slowing down his steps as he arrived at his father's room, he looked around, not seeing his father anywhere.
"Yu Teng, are you looking for your father? They took him somewhere else this afternoon." An elderly woman who he had become acquainted with informed. He turned and grabbed the first nurse he saw and asked for his father.
"Oh, Mr. Yang had been moved to the 23rd floor. He is fine, just a change of room. You can go there."
Yang Yu Teng let out a relieved breath and said his thanks before getting on the elevator. He only realized that the 23rd floor was the highest floor in the building when he pressed the button but he was rushing to see his father to think of any other possibility than just a simple room change.
When the door opened, his eyes went round. He almost stepped back into the elevator, thinking that he may have slipped into another dimension when he saw how different the area was looking as compared to the one he was used to, many levels below.
"I.. I was told that my father was moved here." He was hesitant but he asked anyway. The nurses there were wearing a different uniform but with the same hospital logo, so he thought he must still be in the same hospital.
"It's the room at the end of the hallway." The nurse pointed, smiling. "I'll take you there."
"It's, it's okay. Thank you." Yang Yu Teng walked along the hallway. If it was the previous room, Yang Yu Teng would have pass five doors by now but there was only two doors on the left wing he was pointed to and the room at the end of the hallway, was not really at the end. The door was right in the middle.
He looked up on the large sliding door and saw his father's and a doctor's name on the LED screen on the wall beside it.
Yang Yu Teng slowly slid the door opened, feeling confusedly nervous. He ran towards the bed in the middle of the room, as he saw his father on there.
"Dad! What happened!?"
Mr. Yang who was leisurely reading a newspaper flinched at the sudden yell. "Ah Teng.. Why are you shouting?"
"Why are you here? Did the doctor say anything?"
Mr. Yang smiled, "The doctor said that everything is fine. Don't worry. Yu Teng, you never told me you have such a good friend. The nurses here are really great, beautiful too. Maybe you can find your future wife here."
Yang Yu Teng thought his father was particularly talkative today. He looked around and finally noticed how huge the room was. The wall was painted soft peach, very calm to the eyes, and there was a large TV on the wall right in front of the bed and another at the other side, near the sofa. There was even a coffee table, a desk, and two chairs. Is this a hotel room or what? "Dad! Why did you agree to this? When someone is suddenly this nice to you, you should be worried!"
His father pressed a button by his bed to sit straighter on the bed, his brows furrowed, "Let's go back to the previous room if you're worried, okay. The nurses there are as pretty as the ones here." He joked while still being serious. Mr. Yang did not care much about which room he was in and he hated that he made his son worry.
Mr. Yang turned his head towards the door as a voice sounded, "Why would you, uncle? Just stay here, I'll handle everything."
