Tommy always felt inferior to his older brothers, Wilbur and Techno. He always felt left out of the "smarter" conversations even ones he could participate in he would get ignored. As everyone grew older he realized he would never amount to his older brothers in his family's eyes, and decided to give up.
It started when Tommy was 15, after he won the state spelling bee. Tommy came home ecstatic, disappointed that his family never showed up in the crowd, but still ecstatic nonetheless.
"I won! I really wo-" Tommy trailed off as he spotted his family in the kitchen clearly not paying Tommy any attention as he walked in.
"Oh, Wil thats amazing! And Techno I can't belive you made honor roll again!" Phil smiled as he praised his eldest sons, not noticing Tommy behind him leaning on the doorway his bright face slowly dimming darker by the second.
Tommy heard their voices drifting off slowly as he walked away. "So Wilbur, when can we go see your new band in a gig?" Techno had asked.
The three males kept talking interchangeably as they started talking about where to go out for food and celebrate. Tommy on the otherhand was already out the door again, his trophy in the trash, and his smile wiped away.
That moment. That EXACT moment was when Tommy realized he wasn't good enough for his family. That exact moment Tommy stopped trying, and in that exact moment Tommy decided he would a grudge towards his family for not caring about him enough for as long as he could muster.
