"Alright class, I know it's the first day and all, but let's get straight down to business."
Mr. Code's voice booms out, interrupting everyone in the class from their conversations. He turns his back to us and picks up a piece of chalk and begins to write on the board.
I sit in my seat in the far back corner with my arms wrapped around my stomach protectively. I watch everyone as they talk and laugh with their friends and my throat tightens a bit.
I'm thrown sympathetic glances at points but I pretend like I don't see them, and whenever someone's eyes linger a little too long on me, I try my best to give them an assuring smile.
Mr. Code finally moves away from the board and I squint as I lean forward to see what he has written out.
Musical Arrangement - 25% of your final grade.
My eyes widen in shock and the class becomes frantic. He can't expect us to be able to preform right away, can he?
"Calm down everyone. As big as the twenty five percent looks, it's really nothing to worry about." He explains as he moves up and down the isles between the students. He lingers a little while as he passes me and gives me a small smile in which I return.
"I will be marking you on participation, efficiency and time managment. The actual preformance will only be awarded with one mark. A bonus mark if it's really good though."
Mr. Code chuckles and a lot of the students settle back down and relax back into their seats. "You've all chosen this course because you want to learn, or enhance your knowledge of the guitar and vocals. I will help you do this."
I sit up straighter and wrap my arms even more tightly around my stomach as Mr. Code returns to his desk and opens a drawer. My feet shake nervously against the floor and I bite my lip as he produces a jar filled with paper slips.
"Brenten Foxx."
My head snaps up as Mr. Code calls out the name and my eyes scan the room and land on the familiar face which I had run into this morning. Brenten pushes his glasses higher up onto the bridge of his nose and stands from is seat.
A few of the other kids around me whisper to eachother and snicker under their breath as Brenten passes them and I frown.
"Oh my god, what a loser." I hear one girl whisper to her friend and I become angry. Before I can stop myself I lean forward towards her and grin.
"It takes one to know one, Tori."
My heart beats faster as Tori's face contorts into anger and I mentally kick myself. Why did I have to open my mouth?
"What a great comeback S," She glares at me as the two other girls beside her shake their heads in disaproval. "But I suggest you keep your mouth shut. We've left you alone all Summer, but that doesn't mean that we forgot about you."
My pulse jumps and I swallow hard as I lean back against my seat again, wrapping my arms around myself even tighter.
Tori used to be one of my best friends. We were probably the closest out of our large group of friends, but of course that all changed in the Summer. After it happened, she just couldn't deal with me anymore. She said I was too much and too self absorbed for her.
So she left me, and took all of my other friends with her. Brooklyn's the only one who stayed loyal, and I love her and thank God for that everyday. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do without her.
I watch Brenten plunge his hand into the jar and pick out a single slip of paper. The room is quiet as he opens it, and I lean forward slightly in mild curiosity. Brenten looks from the paper with furrowed eyebrows and back up to Mr. Code before returing back to his seat.
"Brenten what did you pick?" Mr. Code asks him as Brenten takes his seat again.
Brenten pushes his glasses up furthur onto the bridge of his nose and stutters. "Ed Sheeran, Give Me Love"
He quickly folds the paper back up and sticks it into his pocket quickly as Tori and her 'followers' giggle and snicker at him.
"Tori Lambert."
Tori stands as Mr. Code calls out her name and she makes her way to the front, swinging her long brown hair over her shoulders as she goes. Tori does the same thing as what Brenten did, and she plunges her hand into the jar and scoops out a single piece of paper.
Tori's face falls as she reads the slip. She glares at Mr. Code who chuckles and storms back to her seat. "What did you get?" One of the girls asks her and Tori rolls her eyes.
"I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, that's literally so stupid. I hate that song."
I roll my eyes at Tori's whining and sit back in my seat, still making sure that my arms are wrapped tightly around my stomach.
"Serenity McMaster." Mr. Code calls out quietly and the class falls silent as I stand. I shake as I stand because I know that everyone is watching me. There's nowhere to hide and I begin to panic.
I approach the front of the classroom and slide my thin arm into the jar and pull out a slip of paper. Just wanting to get this over with, I unfold the paper and I gasp. The paper all of a sudden feels like it weighs a thousand pounds in my hands, so I drop it to the floor.
I step back and wince as the sound of glass shattering and screaming fill my ears. I open my eyes and find the entire class staring at me with concerned eyes. Feeling extremely overwhelmed, I do the only thing I can think of.
Run.
