Joliette’s POV
I walked up the stairs in front of the apartment, reaching the door. I knocked on the door, stepped back, and waited patiently for Caera. The door slid open, revealing my best friend. She’s truly beautiful. Her hair was asymmetrical, her arms were covered in tattoos, she had her ears pierced, and had stunning blue eyes. “You ready?” I asked. “Umm, actually I can’t go tonight; I have a huge exam tomorrow so I need to study.” “Okay, maybe you can come next time then.” I replied smiling. “Of course!” she exclaimed. I heard Eli start talking; I turned around and saw that he was on the phone with someone. While he was on his cell, I whispered to Caera, “Guess who is now ‘in a relationship’?” “Oh my word, with who?” she exclaimed. I pointed at Eli, who was still talking, “Him.” “I knew it; I saw the way he looked at you when you were talking to me.” She replied smiling. I heard Eli say his goodbyes and he then turned to me and starts speaking; “Urmm, Damian and Layla aren’t going to make it tonight.” He trailed off, awkwardly rubbing his arm. “Looks like it’s just going to be us then.” “What? Caera, you’re not going either?” he asked. “No, I have an exam tomorrow.” She replied. “Okay, I’ll guess we’ll see you later then.” “Definitely, bye” she said waving. She walked back inside, closing the door behind her. Eli was opening the car door, getting in the car. I hurried over, and slid into the car seat beside him. “So, since it’s only us, how about a change in plans?” I asked. “Sure, what do you have in mind?” “Can we go to the mall?” “Shopping? A bit cliché,” he said laughing. “Hey, I need a new camera; the screen went out on mine.” “Well, okay.” And with that, we headed toward the mall.
I fixed my gaze out the window, watching the scenery pass by. I wonder if humans didn’t change the landscape, what it may have looked like; without roads, without buildings, without farms and fields, just the perfect nature that has been tormented by us ruthless humans. I didn’t realize I was so dazed in my thoughts until I noticed Eli tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. His face was contorted, like he was in pain. “Are you okay, Eli?” He shook his head ‘no.’ “Pull over.” He did just that; and once on the side of the highway he took his hands and held his head. “What’s wrong? Is it your head?” “Mhm.” He groaned. “Get out, I’m driving.” He willingly switched places with me, leaving me at the wheel. Now I must say, he has a damn nice car. I put it in gear, and hit the gas, heading back to the college campus. Concentrating on the road, Eli yelled, “WATCH OUT!” I slammed on the brakes and yanked the wheel, sending the car back to the side of the road. “WHAT THE FUCK?!” I yelled at Eli. “You didn’t see it?” he whispered hesistantly. “THERE WAS NOTHING THERE.” I saw his eyes glass over, and tears fell out of his eyes. He started whispering, almost inaudibly, “No, no, no, this can’t be happening again.” What the hell is he talking about? What does he mean by again? What could he have possible have seen? I decided it was better to talk at his place, not on the side of the road where a car could slam into us at any given moment. “Look, just close your eyes, and we will talk when we get home, okay?” I said softly. “Okay.” He whispered. He had a lost look in his eye, like he wasn’t sure of something, or even almost scared of something. What is wrong with this boy?
