Happy Hearts Orphanage

The sun hasn't showed up for days now. I am starting to miss the playground and the soft green grass in the fields but it was all muddy and slippery from the heavy downpours. I also miss the fuss everyone's making by this time of the year, we were suppose to hang the Christmas lights and decorate the orphanage for the holidays, but it was too wet outside. I feel like the weather is feeling my mood right now.

I turned around from the window and walk towards my 9 yr. old sister. Her jet black hair covers her face as she packs her things quietly. I reach out and grab the night light we plug every night to keep the hallway ghosts away.

"Don't you forget this. You won't be able to sleep." I handed it to her. I heard her sniff and I saw her small hands shaking.

It took me a lot of courage to sit beside her and brush all the hair away from her rosy beautiful face. My bravery was taken aback when I see the streams of tears roll down her face, she's already crying and I can't let her see how wretched I am as well. I hugged her tightly in my arms as she weeps, I don't know what to say. I don't even know what I exactly feels right now.

After a few moments Ms. Kang came into the room and saw how the hearts of her two precious angels get slowly broken. She finished the packing for Dahyun before sending her to the washroom to take a bath, her new parents would want to see a neat and presentable daughter.

"Between the both of you, you're the stronger one.." Ms. Kang kneels before me to meet my hazel brown eyes before she continues "and you need to continue being strong for the both of you." She gave out a faint solacing smile and hugs me.

As soon as the grandfather's clock chimes to 6:00 in the evening the doorbell rang and we all know who's at the door. The mother superior rushes to open it and welcomes the two adults in their raincoats and boots. All the unpicked foundlings beams down at them from the second floor. Everyone looks at them like they're our saviours, but they can only save one of us and I'm glad that it's my sister.

Everyone gazes at Dahyun when she goes down the spiral staircase wearing her pink coat. It's the only coat she has and we got it from the donations three years ago. She's so prim and walks with caution. Her bedraggled blonde hair is now put nicely in a pony tail exposing her coral cheeks and charming freckles. No wonder they chose her.

Her new parents looks satisfied and enthusiastic. They even got her a white teddy bear, everyone watches her with desire. The father carried her in his arms as they bid their farewells to the orphanage staff.

Dahyun looks up and catches my eye. She looks remorseful but I know deep down that she's happy... I am happy. I smiled at her and waved. She did the same, and that was the last time we saw each other.
