The old grandfather clock ticked on, every tick echoing in a droning gentle sound. It was the only sound being produced in the lone quiet room housing the miseries of a lone girl and a corpse. After allowing the numerous tears to spill from her eyes upon her grieving, Harmony's body surely grew tired, her aching heart unable to bear much more of this, her dearest friend dead and she knew not why. The gift of a dreamless sleep overtook her, her teary eyes glued shut and that ever present ticking lulling her into a much-needed rest. Her body slumped over onto his corpse, still holding Mark with an ever faithful and protective grip. It was almost reminiscent of all the times the two would be found together, napping peacefully after a long day, whether in the park out in the springtime or in his home by the fire on a cool autumn's day. This instance wasn't quite so comfortable, but it was familiar enough, and Harmony craved that familiarity.
When she had finally woken, it was not of her own volition. The Detective, Abe, had returned to the room of the murder, deducing the best course of action at this moment was to study the body closer and run tests to help him piece together any vital clues that may help solve this mystery. When he entered the room, he immediately noticed he wasn't alone, spotting Harmony's slumped form upon Mark. He only pitied her more when he concluded she hadn't left the room since earlier and stayed faithfully with Mark. Another tick off her "guilty chart". No murderer would dedicate themselves that much to prove their innocence. It would be ridiculous. Still, as a good detective, no one was proven completely innocent until this case was solved.
Abe approached her, bent down and gently nudged her shoulder to wake her, uttering, "Hey, kid. Sorry, but I'm gonna need you to get up."
Harmony groaned and slowly opened her eyes, still rather worn, glancing up at Abe while blinking the sleep away from her heavy eyes.
"You alright there, kid?" Abe asked, genuinely concerned.
Harmony sighed and wiped away any remaining tears from her eyes, one hand remaining glued onto Mark.
She slowly nodded and replied, "I-... I think so."
Abe took both her hands into his own and helped her up, Mark slipping out of her hold and back in his place onto the ground. She noticed and swiftly looked down to-...
Her heart constricted. She had instinctually looked to check if he'd bumped his head... But it didn't matter anymore. It didn't matter whether to check if he was okay or not. Corpses don't feel...
The Detective noticed the sadness clouding the face of the once cheerful person he'd met last night. He still felt there was more he could do for her and felt an internal lightbulb click within him.
"Hey, uh, look. I'm going to be honest, but this case may prove... difficult. I can see how much Mark meant to you and, well, I'm sure finding answers are just as important to you, mystery or not. If you wanted to, would you be up to helping me crack the case?" Abe offered.
He always did prefer having a partner by his side. Unfortunately, they always seemed to die in tragic ways, some even in ironically hilarious ways, but that made it all the more tragic. Despite his record, he had a feeling this time would be different.
Harmony gasped, the request snapping her completely out of her sad sleepy daze and without hesitation she avidly agreed, saying, "Yes! Oh, please yes! I-I can help! I want to do whatever I can! Just name it!"
Abe chuckled at her enthusiastic desire to help and placed his detective's hat onto her head, officiating her and replying, "Alright then, kid. Till this case is solved, you're my new partner."
