Walking home from school was always a drag for Kisa. Spirits were always moaning or crying to her, aware that she could see them instinctively. Some just wanted someone to talk to, others wanted someone to annoy, and some were even outright evil.
Mostly though she saw normal day-to-day spirits– They were the most common– but rarely did she run into a vengeful cursed spirit. Those were the spirits who turned into a curse for some bad reason usually relating to how they died. Kisa could never think about the spirits' negative reasons for too long though. Her empathy for some reason enabled them to drain her cursed energy.
Yeah, those were the worst.
Luckily today was mostly quiet! The exception was the old lady down the street who wouldn't stop asking Kisa about her cat. It wasn't anything new however, that spirit did that every day.
"I'm home," Kisa announced sliding off her shoes at the entrance and tossing her backpack to the side, she usually didn't do homework until after dinner.
"How was school?" Her aunt Yoko was typing on her computer, probably working. She recently got promoted to head editor for a food magazine. Yuko was really excited when it happened. Kisa was just happy she was happy because her aunt was an anxious woman for the most part, never able to be content before worrying.
"Same old same old," Kisa groaned, throwing herself into the couch face first.
"Don't relax yet! You know we have to train," Kisa heard her finish up what she was typing before she swiveled her chair towards her.
"I'm asleep though," Kisa mumbled into the couch and her aunt laughed.
"Kisa's asleep!" Her aunt fake gasped, playing along, but evilly added, "Man, I thought that if we trained hard today I'd take us out for sushi tonight."
Kisa sat up.
"I'm awake."
"Great! Go get changed," Yuko beamed, already heading towards their basement.
"Hai," Kisa slowly made her way to her room, then changed out of her uniform. She tied her black hair up into a ponytail, noting it was getting longer. She probably needed a haircut soon. She looked in the mirror at her unnatural dark brown eyes, hiding her natural ones with cursed energy like second nature. She took one last glance at her dead ends before turning off the light and joining her aunt in the basement.
"Is Mina joining us today?" Her aunt asked, setting both of their water bottles to the side.
"Tell her I'm busy," Mina spoke, appearing next to Kisa, who has gotten so used to her popping out of nowhere that it didn't faze her anymore.
"She's being lazy," Kisa said, snitching.
"Hey!" Mina pouted and Kisa stuck her tongue immaturely out back at her.
"Mina, I can't have two lazy teenagers in this house," Yuko teased and it was Kisa's turn to be offended.
"Hey!"
"Fine." Mina caved.
"She's here," Kisa reflected.
"Perfect! Why don't we start with you two working together again like usual," Her aunt instructed, pointing towards the different weights on the table. Usually, Kisa would use them to actually work out, but that wasn't the type of training they were doing right now.
Through the years Kisa and Mina discovered that if Kisa expended enough of her cursed energy on Mina, Mina could actually interact and touch things instead of passing through. It wasn't something Kisa could do with any other spirit, only Mina because of their link.
