Stark white clouds rolled across an endless sky. A gentle breeze swept over the rooftop and tussled Sebastian's blonde locks. This was his favorite place in school. He could spend hours up there laying down, watching the clouds or closing his eyes. It was quiet and peaceful and he enjoyed the time away from all the fighting.
Up here, Sebastian was just a guy. He wasn't the head of class 3A or a screw up with no future. Teachers didn't constantly tell him he wasn't going to amount to anything and end up being found dead in an alley somewhere. His parents didn't look at him as if he were a disappointment that ruined their lives.
Here he could forget everything and everyone.
The peaceful silence was shattered by the sound of the rooftop's creaking metal door.
Sebastian knew who it was before they even came into view. There was only one other person in the entire school who was allowed up here.
"You know fifth period is already over, right?" Jasper Long bent over to peer at his best friend.
Sebastian blinked before sighing and sitting up. "How long have I been up here?"
The black haired boy leaned back against the metal railing that was built along the rooftop's edge. "Since lunch, so two hours."
He glared at his best friend. "And you're only coming to get me now? What the hell man?"
Jasper rolled his eyes. "Oh fuck off. It's not like you give a shit about coming to class. Besides, I thought you could use the rest. It's been a hell of a week."
He was right about that. With the rise of the seniors, things at Timberview were getting out of hand. It was all because of one guy in particular.
Milo West was a senior who once rose above everyone to become the undefeated king of Timberview High when he was just a freshman. By the end of freshman year, nearly four years ago, he'd had even the seniors back then in the palms of his hands.
Sebastian believed since it was Milo's last year before graduating, he was taking things up a notch by creating as much havoc as he could. He was starting fights all the time, at least six or seven times a day. Milo was thirsty for blood and wanted to leave a legacy behind that would have the entire school talking about it for years to come. But that wasn't the only reason.
He was trying to get the attention of Alexander Cross, an organized leader of the criminal underground. Sebastian didn't know much about the infamous crime lord. All he knew was that if anything bad happened in the city, he was somehow involved. And Milo wanted to be a part of it. He'd heard what everyone had heard; Alexander had a pension for collecting the strongest youths in the city to be a part of his empire.
But because Milo was leaving, the rest of the school's students were beginning to stir at the prospect of becoming the new king of Timberview High. They were picking fights with one another to determine their standing in the years to come.
Sebastian didn't care about any of that. He simply wanted to get through the next two years without a hitch. That was proving more difficult to do as the days went by. They were only two weeks into the school year and already fifteen different people had challenged him. Sebastian may have wanted to finish out his high school days in peace, but he'd be dammed if he let some dick pick a fight with him and get away with it.
It gave him a bit of a reputation to uphold in school, one that made even the seniors and Milo West give him a wide berth. They stayed out of each other's business, until now. His need for validation was giving Sebastian quite a bit of inconvenience and he was becoming tired of it.
Sebastian had always been the kind of guy who, despite all his shortcomings and flaws, put other people before himself. It was a flaw in and of itself, but his childhood prevented him from thinking of only his well being. It didn't matter where he found himself, Sebastian made sure that everyone else was taken care of.
In this case, the people in his own class, though for the most part it was mainly just Jasper. He kept the other juveniles away from class 3A, keeping everyone inside safe, including his best friend. It gave him a purpose, but during all his years at Timberview, it was beginning to really take a toll on him.
"How's it looking inside," Sebastian asked as he stood from his resting place. He picked up his school's blazer that he'd been using as a pillow and shook it out. He watched as dirt and gravel fell to the ground. Shrugging his shoulders at the white patch he found left behind from the dirty roof on the crisp dark blue fabric, he put it on without dusting it off. Straightening it onto his form, he left it unbuttoned and adjusted its collar.
"News is spreading that some guy in Leroy's class beat up two of his boys and left Leroy humiliated."
Now that was interesting. Leroy Hayes had been a pain in Sebastian's ass since his middle school days. He'd been wanting to teach the douche bag a lesson for years now, but Sebastian didn't start fights; he finished them and made sure to do it well enough so the next person would think twice before coming at him. And Leroy knew better than to mess with him anyways.
"Really? By who?"
Jasper shrugged his shoulders. "Not a fucking clue. It was probably by some prick with dreams of making it big here. I didn't stick around long enough to get a name. Didn't care too much either."
Sebastian rolled his eyes. It was just like his friend to only care about himself, well himself and Sebastian. The two of them had been friends since elementary school and where one went, the other wasn't far behind. They did everything together.
He didn't care about who was fighting who unless it involved him or his best friend. Jasper had a hot temper though, so the smallest things would sometimes set him off.
"Well let's find out. If that's the case, I want to be made aware. We don't need any more hotshots thinking they can take over class 3A." He sighed. "I can't keep dealing with this bullshit."
