[This is another little thing for my librarian au (be sure to check out "LET'S CALL IT A DAY" before reading this lmao). This actually contains a big spoiler, but I can't wait to write certain scenes, so here I am posting it anyway. This is more of a flashback, which is why Jacob isn't there, nor is it in his perspective.]

It was noon and the sun was high in the sky, sending straight rays of sunshine down at the dry ground.
It was Monday and Myron was wandering around, searching for something, or rather someone. He bent down to look through the entrance of the library, peering into the room with what to him seemed like empty shelfs.

"Abe?" he said, his voice filling the little room. There was no answer. Myron stood up again, a confused look on his face. By now, he had searched everywhere for his friend.
He turned around and spotted his brother resting not too far away from him, leaning against one of the buildings. Caul was cleaning his teeth with a branch, using it like a toothpick. "Abraham didn't come to work today!" Myron pointed out.

Caul flicked his sort of toothpick away and gave his brother a telling grin. "That's because he never left in the first place." Caul said.
Myron tilted his head, even more confused. "But I can't find him anywhere."
Caul patted his stomach, grinning. "Why, he's right here." Myron froze and his eyes widened in shock. "You—you didn't—" he stumbled.

"I did." Caul said. He made himself a bit more comfortable, putting his arms behind his head and sighed. "You know, I wish it would have been more of a challenge—well, it was—but it went by so fast. I couldn't even enjoy it that much." He clicked his tongue, a little disappointed. "Oh, well."

Myron took a few staggering steps backwards, not believing his ears. He had gone a bit pale.
"Oh, Abe fought bravely, really," Caul went on. "but I was stronger."
"Stop talking." Myron said, then turned to leave, but didn't walk away, yet. "When did that happen?"
"On Friday." Caul said and grinned. "He is definitely dead by now, in case you think of saving him somehow."

Trembling a little, Myron only nodded. He slowly walked away, eyes fixed on the ground. Caul shouted something after him—"What? Are you going to cry now?"—but Myron barely listened. Instead he thought how he should've been there, that it could've been prevented. Or could it? This was how every librarian had ended up since the brothers arrived here after all. Maybe the next one wouldn't, but the thought alone sounded nearly impossible. Myron told himself that he'd try his best to protect the next librarian.

"Hey, I'm talking to you!" Caul shouted again, but then, with a strong slap of his wings, Myron took off into the air, sending red dust off the dry ground. Caul sighed, annoyed and rolled onto his side, deciding to take a nap in the hot sun.

[—]

The temperatures had dropped and the dark sky and shining moon made everything look blue, rather than red. Myron wasn't sleeping, yet—there was still something to be done.

He approached his brother, who lay slightly curled up, probably dreaming about the next librarian and how they would taste. Caul giggled a little in his sleep and said, sweetly, "Come to me, little librarian, come and—"

Myron's hands closed around Caul's neck and he lifted him up. With a gasp, Caul jolted awake and forced his eyes wide open. He struggled briefly, then grasped his brother's arms, trying to pull them away from him, but Myron's grip only tightened.

He was choking him now and the glow emitting from Caul's eyes flickered and seemed to slowly fade. "What...are you...doing?" Caul groaned with pain. Then Myron let him go, tossing him back to the dusty ground, but he wasn't done with him, yet. Before Caul could fully regain his breath, Myron came at him again, pulling him back to his feet.
