Esther Avery served in the army's 3rd battalion, 75th ranger regiment as a sharpshooter and hostage negotiator specialist for 4 tours in Afghanistan. She served those first 2 with Jay Halstead before he decided not to reenlist. Esther felt her work in the military wasn't finished yet and decided to go back despite Jay's objections. The two still kept in touch while she was overseas with video chats and letters.
When a rescue mission goes south and Esther is injured she gets honorably discharged with a Congressional Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart for her actions and injuries sustained in duty.
She is offered a job by her god father Hank Voight and immediately accepts, so now she is starting her new adventure as a member of the Chicago Police Department and living in Chicago. Gaining new friends who will become family, and being reunited with her godfather who's all she has left.
But what she doesn't know is that her past is still lurking around in the shadows and no matter how hard you try, eventually those shadows catch up to you.
