Thirty-Six:

Dove

Something didn't feel right.

Maybe it was all in my head.

I don't know. Anastasia had come down with the flu probably from overworking herself and had been in her room since morning. A maid that Gedeon said he trusted more than anyone else had been prepping our meals and taking care of us since Anastasia didn't want me to catch it.

I paced the room back and forth, clutching onto the cell phone Gedeon had left for me on the table this morning along with some Advil and water. It made my heart swell when I realized he had trusted me enough to give me a phone. I had never had one before, so I spent most of my morning in bed with it, trying to learn everything I can to help distract me.

It was currently four, and I was starting to worry why they were taking so long.

Were they okay?

Did something happen to them? To Gedeon?

Almost as if he had read my mind, the cell rang. I jumped at the sound before the ID read Gedeon's name. Relief washed over me and my heart thumped.

"Gedeon," I breathed on the phone, a smile breaking out of my face. "You're okay."

When I was greeted with silence and the sound of the car engine, I pressed my ears closer to the phone. My heart raced, and I thought of so many things that could be wrong right now. "Gedeon?"

"You lied."

I blinked a few times, trying to comprehend the two angry words he gritted out. Then, I sucked in a sharp breath. He found out. He found out before I could tell him when he came back. I felt like I couldn't breathe. Immediately, I opened the balcony, gripping onto the ledge. "Gedeon, I swear it's not what it seemed like."

"You lied to me," he repeated again, harder and harsher. "You vowed to be by my side. You vowed to be honest with me because I am your husband."

"Yes, and I am," I agreed, trying to calm myself down. I was finally going to tell him everything. That we could finally start our life together. That I think I'm falling for him. I was going to tell him tonight after everything and hope he would understand. "I didn't want to ever hurt you. I was going to tell you yesterday. I tried two times. I was going to tell you as soon as you came home," I pleaded. "Please. You're my husband and I'm your wife. You're my other half. I'm...I'm your Jian bird."

And you're mine.

"No, you're not," he objected, his voice thick and heavy. He took a deep breath, and tears started to gather in my eyes as he continued. "You're the reason my mother is dead. You. Fucking you! Did you know this whole time?"

I choked, nothing coming out of me and that was all the answer he needed. "You knew."

"Gedeon, please," I begged through my tears, hoping he'll hear me out. Hoping he'll calm down and listen to me that I didn't realize either until a few days ago when he said it looked as if he had matching scars that I remembered. "I was going to tell you—"

"You fucking knew," he cut me off, a dry chuckle escaping his lips. "You knew and you didn't tell me. You were going to play innocent, weren't you?"

"No, I wasn't," I shook my head, though I knew he couldn't see me and held my phone closer to me. There was a rattle on the locked door, and I muffled my sob. The last thing I wanted was Anastasia to see me in this state. "I...I'm your wife."
