The Beginning

[Present day]

So. The beginning.

I was created by the radiation. I didn't know what had happened, or how... and I guess I was curious. It's not just me, as I may have mentioned.

I mentioned 'the others' to the rest of the people inside the walls when I first arrived... it confused them a lot, and one of them even tried to kill me. I guess they were a little scared when some monster leapt over the wall one day without warning... maybe they thought I was going to attack them.

So yeah. The others.

When I was created, I wasn't the only one. I don't know how or why. They were all different... sad, whereas I was happy. At first we lived together happily - at least, I was happy - but the others started noticing that I was different.

My new family says different is good, that we should embrace it... but the other radiation monsters didn't think that way. In short? They thought I was a bit weird, perhaps?

To fix this, I went on walks far away. It made them less angry at me, so I did it more often. That's how I discovered the walls.

I~~

"What's happened?" I asked aloud, but Harley was gone. Nobody was inside the library.

Silence aside from the clucking of the chicken every now and then.

One second, I'd been writing just like Harley showed me... but now it's just not working. I scribbled with the feather but only a very faint line could be seen, no matter how many times I dipped it back into the ink sac, in fact, it seemed to be getting paler. I can't write like this...

I picked the ink sac up and squeezed it, a single drop of black liquid splashed onto the ground.

Okay... so if there is no ink, there is no writing?

And if there is no Harley, there is no ink.

So no Harley means no writing.

Hmm... I thought, I could just continue writing my diary later. Then I can show it to everyone and explain where I come from.

Picking up the book to stash it in my inventory, I felt my stomach growl. Oh yeah, I remember what that means. I need food.
I took a bite of my bread whilst heading out of the library. I didn't see anyone here...

"Hey!! Priest! Priest, come look at this!" I yelled, racing over to where they were stood just outside the church.

"Hmm? Oh, Lucky! What happened?"

The priest didn't have a name other than 'priest', as far as I'm aware. I don't know where it came from, but I just feel... connected to it somehow? Anyway, the priest was the main person who helped me out here, although everyone had been nice to me.

"I wrote the first part of my life!" I proudly exclaimed, waving the book around.

"Cool! Come with me downtown a second, okay? To my office"

"Oki" I nodded, scampering on ahead.

Priest called from behind me, "stop running, you're depleting all your energy bars"

"But the farmer bees gave me three stacks of food! I have loads left, look" I pointed out, pulling out my stash of food. Or, rather, what was left of it.

"Three bread, two beetroot... and a single wheat." Priest laughed, walking into its room. "Don't worry, I've got some carrots for you"

"Yay!" I exclaimed.

"You like carrots?"

"They're orange, like me" I explained, "and the rabbits like them. Rabbits are cute."

"Yeah" Priest muttered, only half paying attention as it was now reading the book. At one point, it groaned in frustration.

"What is it?"

"The others, it's always 'the others'. We wanna know who they are" Priest sighed, "and why are you different to them?"

"I wanted the answer to that question" I mumbled sadly.

"I should have guessed" it admitted, "you're always asking questions." I flinched a little at this. "In a good way" Priest quickly added, noticing my sudden movement, "curiosity is good"

"Oki. So... the diary is good?"

"Yeah. Just... I want more"

"I need Harley to write the story. More ink" I explained, "it ran out."

"Who said you need Harley?" Priest asked, and I glanced at it in confusion.

"But... Harley is the only librarian, and nobody else has ink for writing! Because they can't go out the walls to get some!" I protested. Priest pulled a lever and smirked triumphantly, revealing a tiny room full of barrels.

"Behold" it declared, "my stash of... legal stuff."

"Cool!" I squealed in delight, rummaging through barrels stocked with all manner of shiny things, eventually finding a single ink sac. "Now I can keep writing"

"Yes!" Priest grinned. "Also, have you claimed a house yet?"

"Uh... no. No house"

"Okay. Well... there's a couple of free ones I'm pretty sure. Go speak to Ester and she'll show you."

"Which one?"

"One of the farmer bees, Hazel's sister... yeah, I forgot you still didn't know everyone's names."

"I'll look" I confirmed, crashing into the door on my way out.

"Remember! Stop running so much" it called just before I got out of earshot.

Heh, I didn't really listen to the advice.

Sprinting through the fields; the double tall grass and large ferns that were as big as me, and the bright flowers made the place so much cooler to look at. So different to outside the walls.

So much prettier.
