There was no pain.
There was no unspeakable agony, no white-hot flames. In fact, the heat in Eijiro's neck was dying down.
Eijiro opened his eyes.
He was standing in a vast garden softly lit by flickering orange lanterns and floating motes of light. Cobblestone bridges criss-crossed small streams that separated the orderly beds of plants and flowers.
At the center of the garden was the largest tree Eijiro had ever seen. Windows spilling golden light were set into the black trunk. Hight above, the branches curved unnaturally to form a cage-like enclosure, topped with overlapping gold leaves that formed a pointed roof. Housed in the open space within the branches floated large orbs glowing with warm golden light. Eijiro thought he could just make out humanoid figures moving about within.
Suddenly, a bright voice spoke up from right beside him. "Welcome!"
Eijiro jumped nearly a foot in the air and let out an unmanly shriek. He whirled around to face the voice and froze as he came face-to-face with a young man with long, pointed ears and skin so pale it glowed in the moonlight.
He was undeniably a faery.
The faery had a mop of bushy green curls, that may or may not have had actual leaves growing in them, and doe-like, sparkling green eyes. Symmetrical green dots marked his cheeks. He wore a white shirt under a green surcoat and white pants. Green dragonfly wings fluttered out behind him.
The faery flashed Eijiro a grin that showed off pearly teeth and fang-like canines. "Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you. My name is Izuku!"
"Uh..."
"Come on, let's get you inside. The ladies can't wait to meet you!"
Before Eijiro could respond, Izuku grabbed his hand and set off at a sprint toward the giant tree. Eijiro could do little more than stumble and attempt to keep up, hitching up his skirt one-handed so he didn't trip and fall.
They entered through glass-paned double doors at the base of the tree into a huge cylindrical room. Eijiro just managed to get a glimpse of a polished obsidian floor and what might have been a kitchen before Izuku flitted up a set of wrought iron stairs that was built into the wall, dragging Eijiro along behind him.
They reached the top of the stairs, which opened up into the branches of the tree. The glowing orbs, which seemed to be rooms, were even more breathtaking up close. Turned out they weren't actually floating though; the obsidian branches of the tree wove around and between the rooms, holding them up and forming walkways between them.
Izuku led Eijiro across several of these walkways to a small room with a black iron door.
Izuku rapped sharply on the door, and it was opened by a woman with bright pink skin and matching gravity defying curls who was wearing a shockingly short teal dress. There were horns sticking up out of her hair and golden eyes with black sclera.
"You made it!" the woman cried, clapping her hands gleefully.
Another woman peered out from behind the pink one. This one looks slightly more human with dark purple hair cropped short and decorated with a gold headband with bejeweled tassels hanging off of it. Heavy kohl lined this woman's eyes and her lips were painted black. She wore a much more modest purple dress. The only inhuman thing about her was her string-like earlobes that hung down to her chest, which were decorated with beads and tipped with metal.
"She's all yours, Mina, Kyoka," Izuku said.
The pink woman grabbed Eijiro's wrists and pulled him into the room. The door clicked shut behind them. A quick glance around told Eijiro this was a powder room based on the wardrobe and privacy screen on one wall and vanity table on another.
