Who really are the Saint-Laurent's? An Exclusive.
- Melena Ryzik, Writer and Editor. June 1993
Largely regarded as one of the foremost, revolutionary fashion designers of the twentieth century, Yves Saint-Laurent has paved the way for French fashion to make a return to the world stage with his eponymous brand: YSL.
Trousers for women twenty years ago would be considered an atrocity, yet here I sit in a pair of blue jeans today within the four walls of a dominion in fashion. In front of me sit three generations of the Saint-Laurent Family and I had the honour to interview them during my time in their grand duplex in the heart of Paris.
Yves
Prior to the interview, Yves ensured to notify our publicity staff that he no longer has creative control of the Yves Saint-Laurent label and consequently asked for the interview to focus on his neice and great-neice. He sat wearily on the edge of the lounge, watching with pride as his family joined for the interview.
Camilla
Poised, regal and undeniably captivating . Barely entering her early thirties, Camilla Saint-Laurent has already cemented herself within fashion history. As the legendary Gianni Versace once said, she has the elegance of the queen with an added allure of mystery and sadness. She holds herself as though she's already seen the troubles and triumphs of the entire world. It was difficult to ascertain almost anything from Camilla during the interview, she spent most of the time sitting magnanimously in the corner of the loveseat sofa, letting her uncle and only daughter direct the interview.
I managed to receive only a single response from Camilla during the interview. Camilla, where do you hope to be in 10 years? both in your personal life and career?: Camilla smiled to herself for a second, her green eyes focusing on her hand which ran over a blemish in the hem of her dress. She let her eyes linger on me for a second before replying with a single word: "Happy."
Cecilia
Young, vibrant and fierce. Cecilia is the youngest generation of the Saint-Laurent revolution. She embodies the grunge of the 90s and the fierce feminism instilled within her by her mother. The epitomy of the modern girl; with the entire fashion world twirled around her finger, all waiting eagerly to see the inevitably wild, drastic direction which she will take the Saint-Laurent family name.
You are a gorgeous young girl, do you aspire to follow in your mother's footsteps?: Cecilia laughs throwing her brown hair back behind her shoulders. "Before I answer that question, you should know that being young and beautiful is not the utmost compliment anymore. I'd rather be innovative and intelligent any day of the week. But I don't know if I want to follow my mother into fashion. I'm only a teenager, I'm not going to rule anything in or out at this stage."
Your father is not mentioned often in the media, do you see him often?: At this question, Cecilia's blazing confidence falters only momentarily. She glances of at her mother who rests her hand on her daughter's knee. Camilla speaks for the second time in this interview; "We ask that the public respect our family's privacy. We are a happy family and that is all we will reveal."
It's difficult not to wonder about the Saint-Laurent household behind closed doors. From Camilla's scandals with the likes of celebrities such as Christopher Reeves to the spectacular exit of Camilla's younger sister Allegra from the spotlight, one can't help but wonder is this family really as perfect as they seem? The mystery surrounding Cecilia's father poses the question, what wild side to the ever-elegant Camilla have we not seen that's resulted in her thrust into the role of supposedly single mother at 19?

"What a load of absolute bullshit." Cecilia threw the magazine across the table. "Words really are sharper than a knife."
Camilla smiled, running her hands through her daughter's hair and gently kissing her forehead. She really had no idea. She thought to herself, quietly grabbing the latest Daily Prophet hidden underneath the piles of media scattered across the large wooden table. It was 1993. This was the first time anybody had broken out of Azkaban.
