Death...there are many words to describe it such as violent, grim, dreadful, cruel, unjust and so many more but very rarely would Death be described as beautiful. You see it was not Death's fault for being bestowed such a sorrow filled job nor was it Death's fault for all the things that had happened to those who had been given the gift of Life, no it was merely Death's job to collect the souls of those who could no longer live on in their world.
You see Death loved Life, she was everything Death was not, beautiful, lovely, enchanting and so, so much more and though at first Death had been envious at how much Life was cherished, she came to love Life more than anything. Death had never taken Life for granted, such as the humans and yet Death could never get more than a glance from her. It was understandable, why would someone like Life ever really acknowledge Death, the one who would collect the souls of the ones who Life could not save.
Death had lost count of how many days had passed since she had seen her one and only love. The days seemed to drag on longer as the years passed and soon those years turned into centuries. Death yearned with all her being to see Life just once and maybe if she did see her again, she would finally confess her undying love for her but would the Fates ever allow it? That was a question still left unanswered.
A few more years passed by and then when Death least expected it, there she was, Life, in all her extravagant beauty. She was more dazzling than Death remembered her to be and yet as Death tried to call out to Life...she could not for her voice refused to speak and her legs refused to move, she could not do anything as she stood, frozen. Perhaps had she not been so ridiculed and hated throughout her lifetime, she would have had the courage to call out to Life, to confess her feelings, but her anxiety and fear of how Life would react slowly started to envelope her. It was not a foreign feeling but it was unwelcome, it made Death afraid and Death was never afraid as she had told herself so many times before. The anxiety slowly started to steal the air from her lungs. She took in frenzied breathes, the panic setting in as she saw Life begin to leave. No, she yelled out in her head, this can't be it. She hasn't even looked at me! I haven't told her how I feel! Death's breathes became erratic, the world started to spin around her maybe it was never meant to be, she thought as her vision darkened.
When Death finally regained her senses, she found herself in the arms of Life, a soft and gentle smile on her face, a concerned look in her gaze. "Are you alright?" she said in her delicate and soothing voice.
All Death could do was nod as she feared her voice would fail her again, if she were to try and speak. Life seemed relieved that Death was alright and she gently ran her hand through Death's ebony hair in a soothing manner. "You had given me quite the scare, but I'm glad you are alright."
Death grimaced, "I apologise, my Lady for scaring you. Please forgive me, as I should not have been so foolish and overworked myself."
Life laughed, "There is no need to apologise, Death for I was merely worried about my counterpart, for what would I do without you?"
Death was taken aback by this. Did she hear her correctly? Was Life truly concerned for her?
The twinkling sound of Life's laugh filled the air, "A worrywart as usual I see."
Death frowned, "What do you mean by that, my Lady?"
A sombre expression slowly began to replace Life's stunning smile. "So, it's true...you have truly forgotten everything." Her soft hand gently caressed Death's face, "If only I had done something to save you from this fate."
Death looked at Life, perplexed. What was she referring to, what did she mean by this?
Life looked down at Death, small droplets rolled down her rosy cheeks, "I am so sorry, my love, had I not been so selfish in trying to save you then perhaps you would still have all your memories."
Death wiped away the tears that slowly rolled down Life's cheeks, "I do not know what you speak of but whatever you had done, I forgive you for it."
"If you knew what I had done, I am sure you would not forgive me so easily."
Death smiled, "I suppose you have no choice but to tell me then."
Life chuckled, "It is only fair that I do." And so, Life told Death all that had happened, everything that led to Life making a deal with the Gods to save Death from the very fate that Death dealt to other living beings.
You see Life and Death were once mortal. They were lovers, however people hated them, despised their relationship calling it unholy. This didn't stop the two from seeing each other. Instead it only made their bond stronger, however one day while Life had been away at the market some of the villagers had set the house where Death had been sleeping on fire and by the time Life returned, it was too late. Death had died in that very fire.
Life could not bear the loss of her love and so she cried out to the Gods, begging them to return her lover to her. The Gods told Life of how they could bring back her lover but at the cost that they shall forever serve them. Life accepted, however she was never told of how Death would not remember her or their life together.
Life was ashamed at what she had done and so she had kept her distance from Death, afraid that Death would never love her again as much as she had when they were still mortal. Today, however proved her wrong as Death still forgave her and told her how she would have done the same had the roles been reversed. Life cried in the arms of her lover relieved to finally be able to hold Death once more and so Life and Death lived out the rest of eternity together with no worries of the future, only happy to be together for as long as the fates would allow.
