Summary: kush rahiyen Amrit.
◇◇◇
Amrit watches the happiness that gleams in her brother and his bride's eyes and tries to quell the yearning that rises in her own heart. Vashma steals a look at Uday and he reassures her with his eyes.
That ease, that wordless communication speaks volumes about the bond that they share. Amrit stares silently at the shadowed idols and prays for some semblance of that peace in her life too.
Unconsciously she raises her fingertips and brushes her parting. That ancestral sindoor is still there.
"You wear it only once in your life," Veer had said. "...on your wedding night."
There was this one plunge left to take, this last piece of herself to give away.
She had been torn into so many pieces that Amrit no longer had any hopes of being put together. Instead, she just hoped Veer would aid in gathering herself where she lay scattered.
Her thoughts are brutally torn through when Vashma screams.
In the distance, she points out the mob of men coming towards the temple. All of them exchange glances and the peace of the night goes up in flames.
Later when she looks back at the night at that particular point of high running nerves and adrenalin Amrit cannot recall at all how they managed to reach the railway station from the temple.
Those moments are overlapped with the brutality of last days at Lahore.
The dangers of violence on streets of Lahore are fused with the horrors of that night. Only, just then, she had no idea how further or darker those horrors would soon become.
"Vashma," Amrit holds her back half way, just when they dodge behind a wall to hide from those men. They are the goons from the kotha Uday tells them.
"Give me your Dupatta," she stretches out a hand and when Vashma complies Amrit wraps it around her head and shoulders the way Vashma had had it donned. "Veerji your garlands too. At distance they might not spot you two without them."
They get swallowed by the crowd at the station deliberately.
Randheer reaches for her hand which Amrit shrugs off but he gets hold of her elbow anyway, trying to support her through the pushing by crowd.
They get to the train just as it begins to pull away and Uday manages to get in. He pulls Vashma in after him. For a moment they stumble and end up in each other's arms.
The train gathers speed and Amrit's hand slips from Vashmay's and fall back. It is the last of her friend that she sees for a while.
Amrit gathers Vashma's dupatta wrapped around her and inhales the scent left behind. Her eyes are pricking with hot tears. Just as someone snatches hold of her wrist.
