Summary: "I will end this the way I begun. Alone. On my own."

Amrit wakes to loud voices outside. A peaceful night had cocooned her, amber lights and the soft dripping sound of IV had lulled her to sleep.

Veer had been reading then, a bound volume of something or the other that had him engrossed.

Before she had opened her eyes, Amrit heard the definitive sound of that book being slammed shut.

Veer got up begrudgingly, knowing unless he meets the argument head on, it will come in and disturb Amrit as well. Nayantara, Anwar, Vijendra and three people from the Panchayat, all crowd around the door, which he opens only a crack large enough for him to slip through.

"My wife is asleep," he informs them in a voice that broke no argument. "Take your maha sabha elsewhere."

"Kuwar sahab yeh galat hai -" the eldest of Panchayat representatives begin. "You can't possibly take your wife's side and outcast your mother. Not after all she has done."

"All she has done? What all she has done?"

The man drew a breath at the obviously blunt question. There is no use of trying to stare down the prince, who much like his father had his jaw set in a firm line of displeased arrogance.

"I will not have you tell me what I can and I cannot do. Your job is to advice, and mine to rule."

"Veer beta," Vijrndra cut in rather warningly. Veer gave him a sweeping look.

"You and I both know how many things we have overlooked over the time in name of greater good to Riyasat. I say, Shrigar has no need of her anymore. As for who is right between us, let the law do its job and you will soon learn what all she has done."

"Kuwar sahab you can't throw your mother's lifetime's work in this power grab. Aligning yourself with her opposition, with the people who once worked against your father -"

"Politics is never about people. It is about ideals. Principles. What you believe is right."

The older man sighs.

"I see your mind is made."

Veer gave him a curt nod.

"You see right."

"Veer..." Nayantara cut in softly, sensing the shifting diplomatic danger from her years of experience.

"Rani Ma has kept this estate afloat in several crisis situations. We owe her a huge debt in that sense," the older man begins. "The king's command to us has been to keep her safe. We shall not see her thrown out of her own home in this manner."

Veer presses his lips together.

"Fine. We shall go."

"Kuwar sahab -"
