Once I had finally arrived from school, commuting as my only way of travel since I did not own my own car like everybody else did, and headed right to my room. I had just swiftly passed by my mom, her eyes following me with the confused expression plastered against her face. She wore her usual clothes, holding a plate full of greens ready for a salad.
"You okay?" She yelled after me just before I closed the door, only to open it again.
I poked my head out and nodded at her, confirming my state of well being. "Got too much homework and not enough time."
"But its only four. Why the rush?" She tried to reason. I raised my brow at her and sighed. Then her expression changed drastically as if she had just realized the answer to her own question. "You have a date?" She sounded more excited, to be honest which is hardly a surprise. However, she didn't know that the person I would be meeting is a female. She was unaware of my sexuality and it frightened me of the outcome that one day she will discover this and abandon me as her child. This was known to happen with many people I used to know. Old friends, some even related to me, have experienced this situation with their family. None of them was ever accepted and was forced to leave their own home, or was left behind. This was something I am afraid to encounter one of these days.
Not sure how I would prepare for it.
"Something like that." I replied and kindly smiled. She smiled, nodded and gestured with her hand to continue. I did.
I tried not to rush in to my homework and took my absolute time. But the moment the time read seven-thirty, I knew I was already late.
Frowning at myself, I hurriedly changed in to my only pair of shorts-I don't wear shorts much- and a loose black v-neck shirt. I looked at myself in the mirror and noticed my hair was a mess so I combed and clipped my bangs to my left. Make up was probably needed, seeing that my cheeks were so flushed, but it would take to long and make Val wait even longer for me. I decided to skip it. Finally, I grabbed extra money from my wallet, shoved it in my pocket, sprayed some perfume and left out the door without telling mom.
"Where you going?" I heard Lauren ask before I could reach the door. She stared at me from the kitchen table, eating salad and a piece of chicken.
"Downtown," I answered feeling nervous.
She scoffed and smiled wickedly as if she knew what was going on.
"Meeting Val?"
"How'd you know?" I asked.
"I just know," another smile. She slipped of her chair and wiped her lips with the back of her hand and walked towards me. Crossing her arms, she studied me from top to bottom, nodding with approval. "I can tell you were rushing. She'll probably notice that too." My face turned hot. "Don't worry, she's chill. And she's also outside."
My eyes widened. "She is?" I hissed, now paranoid.
"Been there since seven, actually. I asked her to come in but she refused."
Oh dear, I thought to myself.
"Do I look okay?" I asked in a worried tone.
"Heck yes, now go before mom gets out of the shower." She smiled one last time and opened the door for me. I gave her a squeeze on her shoulder, a sign of appreciation. "Have fun."
