The four of us headed to the bowling alley, me and Lauren sitting in the back seat. Val's eyes were visible through the rear view mirror and sometimes we look at each other. She could only catch a glimpse since she was driving. I, however, continued to gaze at her.
Once we got there, we went in and met up with the owner, Mr. Jackson. He was a big old man in his early fifties who had a full face of grey beard and bushy brows. Lauren knew him the most because she would go to his house and play with his only son Mathew. They were really good friends until two years ago when he died in a car accident. It was the saddest days of Mr. Jackson's life to lose his only son at such a young age. Lauren probably cried the most at his funeral and some more after.

"You guys want a free game?" He asked, cleaning bowling shoes. "Thirteen is unoccupied."

"You can't make money if you keep giving us freebies, you know." Lauren stated.

"You saying you don't want freebies?" He replied. Lauren scoffed and shook her head at him even though he was focused on the shoes. He then looked up from the counter and smiled at me, "Hello Lira, I haven't seen you for a week now. Staying busy I suppose?"

"Sort of," I replied kindly. I was always shy around Mr. Jackson even before what happened to Mathew. He had that angry man aura to him although he could probably pass as a younger Santa Clause. But he was, indeed, a kind and gentle giant. "I've been trying to earn a straight and I just need one more."

"Well, girlie you better stick that small nose of yours in those books and get to studying if you want to go to college." He advised. I smiled and nodded. "Alright, go have fun."

We all headed towards booth number 13 and took our seats while Lauren and Becca punched our names in the computer. Val and I sat together, our skin barely touching. She looked at me with expressionless eyes.

"What?" I said.
"Did you get my texts?" She asked.
I looked away embarrassed. "Yeah, I did." She had texted me last night and this morning but I never replied to them. I honestly wasn't sure why. "Are we okay?"

"We?" I repeated, meeting her gaze. "What do you mean?"

She hesitated, moving farther away embarrassed to show her cheeks had turned red. "I mean-"

"Okay, ladies" Becca cut her short as she turned quickly away from the computer and jumped her behind between us. We both scooted on opposite directions as we made room for her before she could land. "Time to roll some balls." She exclaimed. Her hair smelled like coconut. She knew I loved coconut, especially pineapple coconut. She smiled at me and hooked an arm around my neck bringing me closer against her.

"Val, want to go first?" Lauren asked.

Val looked at Lauren and then at me and Becca, and back to Lauren once again. "Sure, why not." She slowly got up and walked to the platform where all the bowlers took their stand. The whole room was dark and everybody's clothes were glowing especially the white ones. I had a pair of white converse with red outlines and a white spaghetti strap under my red flannel, so I was glowing myself.

"So, Lira" Becca whispered against my ear her breath warm, "What's your status with Val?"

"I honestly don't know."

"Lauren told me you went on a date with her Saturday night." She started getting really close to the point I could feel her lips moving against my skin.

"Yeah I did," I replied suddenly giggling as I felt her tickle me. I leaned my body away from her and gave her a frown. "Stop with your nonsense."

She giggled and backed away, giving us both space. "Sorry, I just seriously missed you. Dad's been on my ass for the past three weeks straight, I hardly had time to plan this trip."
