Mia sat in the war room with her feet dangling from the arm of the chair she was laying across. She tossed a small ball up in the air, completely bored out of her mind, while Mak played cards on the floor with Rue.
Mak seemed to be feeling better today. Her mind wasn't wandering in opposite directions and she was actually smiling, something no one had seen in days. She had enough mental energy to play with Rue, who had been desperately begging her for months.
"Oh come on, you're cheating!" Mak laughed. "You're totally looking at my cards."Rue smiled sneakily. "No I'm not, You're just horrible at this." She exaggerated her facial expressions, gesturing towards the cards in Mak's hands dramatically.
"Mia...tell her she's cheating. I know you'll back me up, come on."
Mia looked between the both of them. "Sorry, I'm staying out of this one. Fight your own battles." Mak groaned, aggravated that her sister wouldn't back her up. She looked back down at the cards, noticing Rue's wandering eyes once again. "I'm not going to play if you're gonna keep cheating," She mumbled.
Before Mak could even think, Mia threw the ball directly at her. It bounced off her head and tumbled onto the floor, rolling in style. "Hey! What was that?" Mak grouched, staring at Mia with a fierceness. Rue fell back onto the floor in a fit of laughter. Her face turned beet red. She clearly thought this was hysterical.
"When I said fight your own battles, I didn't mean literally fight. Hush and finish your game. I'm BORED," Mia stated, getting up to grab her weapon of choice again.
"If you're so bored, why don't you go give your boyfriend smooches?" Rue yelled, still belly laughing. Mak snickered, covering her face with her hands. Mia's face quickly turned pink. She couldn't think of anything to say. Elliot wasn't her boyfriend but he was close enough to it. She just couldn't admit this.
"You're blushing! She's blushing!" Rue teased, pointing at her. Mia stood still, slightly embarrassed, just thinking of the right words. Mak finally uncovered her face and looked at Mia. Her eyes filled with tears from laughing so hard. "Cat got ya tongue?" She teased right along with Rue.
Mia flopped back down on the couch again, sighing. She preferred to ignore her sisters' comments most days. But, this time she couldn't. "He isn't my boyfriend. He probably never will be," She spoke.
"Sooo...you admit you want him to be?" Mak questioned. Rue's eyes widened, staring at her. There was silence for a few seconds. "Hello? Earth to dreamland. Are you alive in there?" Mak said, waving her hand in front of Mia's face. She was zoning out again, into her dreamland where everything was perfect.
Mia had been doing this more often. Her head was up in the clouds, daydreaming always. Sometimes she found herself stuck. It was escapism, a coping method to stress.
Mak pushed her shoulder lightly, causing her to snap back into reality. "You're doing it again. Quit zoning out, it's annoying," Mak joked. She patted Mia on the head and then crawled back on her knees to the center of the room, over to Rue. They continued playing cards for several minutes, boring Mia nearly to death.
Just as the boredom was reaching its peak, a maid walked into the war room. She looked stressed.
"Are you okay miss Ivy?" Mak asked politely. Mia sat up, her head poking up from the back of the chair. Rue continued to play. Ivy exhaled, and patted her dress. "Your brother is being coronated tomorrow. This place needs to be cleaned," she announced.
"He's what now?!" Mak shouted shrilly. The maid winced painfully, very annoyed.
"Why didn't anyone else tell us this until now?" Mia asked her calmly, unlike her sister. "We could've been told ahead of time..ya know, to be prepared and stuff..I-"
